Better ways to spend tax payer dollars.

Officials at Logan Middle School in Logan County, West Va. maintain that Marcum, who has since completed eighth grade, was suspended for one day because he caused a disruption after a teacher asked him to remove a shirt emblazoned with a hunting rifle and the statement “protect your right.â€

“She said, ‘Are you supposed to wear that in school?’ Marcum had previously explained in an interview with local station, WOWK-TV. “I said, ‘I don’t see why I shouldn’t.’

The West Virginia eighth-grader who was suspended and arrested in late April after he refused to remove a t-shirt supporting theNational Rifle Association appeared in court this week and was formally charged with obstructing an officer.

potential of 1 year in prison for that.

and how did he obstruct the officer?

Instead, Adkins asserts that the 14-year-old boy did not follow his orders to stop talking. This verbosity somehow prevented Adkins from performing his police duties.

talking.

talking.

talking.

facing one year in prison for TALKING. WHAT THE ****.

I seriously fail to see why this even remotely got this far, if you don't want the kid to wear the t-shirt , when you dont have a school rule in place, make a fucking rule don't call the cops because he wont take it off.

From an outsider looking in it sometimes appears that you don't have a single country but a bunch of mini countries stuffed into one big land mass.

I'm not a lawyer nor have I ever pretended to be one, BUT, I think his rights have been severely infringed upon. It is sad that this teacher who is paid by taxpayer dollars is now going to cost these very taxpayers money due to the fact that she has OVERstepped her authority as a teacher.

The police officer says the 14 year old was talking and wouldn't stop? The policeman should have never even been called. What a waste of time by these public workers.

I seriously hope the teacher loses her job and the policeman is given a suspension. Who the Hell do they think they are?

I do agree he more than likely WON'T serve a day, but its ridiculous that talking can be considered obstructing a police officer.

Can't just talking be an assault charge in the eyes of some police officers/judges?

therein lies the problem I think that needs to be conclusively defined, not just what they deem qualifies at the time.

No one knows if the school has a policy on what kind of shirts people can wear.

When I was in high school there was a list of shirts we weren't allowed to wear. It was a school policy, not a freedom of speech policy. It's pretty much the same if you decided to wear something that your employer objected to if there was a handbook or policy.

It's a silly rule. but it prevented me from wearing my "The funky Cypress Hill" shirt with a marijuana leaf on the front of it. I just wore another shirt and got on with my school day.

The situation was taken to an extreme, that's for sure.

It was stated in the article, the school had no such policy the shirt would have violated.
