If you haven't see "This Film Is Not Yet Rated", I highly suggest it. It has a small part where they talk about that scene and how they knew going into it they wouldn't get anything less then a NC-17 rating, so they went all oput knowing that the MPAA would refuse it. The scenes they made for the explicit reason to get cut out are phenomenal.

The ratings system in theory is good. It gives you a bit of an idea what to expect. Let a piece of art soar and touch people or let the turds sink.

Well hang on. I think R is sufficient. R means you have be an adult (17 is close enough) to see this film. There should be nothing higher than that. The NC-17 rating allows them to restrict freedom of the industry.
