According to Hockey Prospectus, center Marcus Kruger is the best among a top-tier collection of Blackhawks prospects. The 21-year-old Swedish pivot was named the Hawks' top prospect according to the publication, which also named Chicago's system the fifth-deepest in the NHL behind only Detroit, the New York Islanders, Nashville and Ottawa in the first edition of their 2011 rankings.

"The Blackhawks had an elite level of depth prior to the 2011 draft, and then they went on and had one of the best hauls of any team," writes Hockey Prospectus' Corey Pronman. "The Hawks are one year removed from a Cup and looked like one of the better teams in the NHL last season, and unfortunately for the Central Division they aren't going to be done for a long time. Through a couple of trades and shrewd draft picks, Chicago has managed to build one of the league's elite systems that has the chance to deliver several significant pieces to the big club over the next few years. "

Pronman also has high hopes for Kruger himself, saying that he projects "easily [to] be a good two-way top-six player," and adding:

"His hockey sense is a plus tool as Kruger thinks the game very well in both zones, displaying an offensively-gifted playmaker style of game, on top of showing advanced defensive abilities. He has above-average puck skills and combining that with his vision and anticipation allows him to be an effective playmaker who can make people miss and set up his teammates. Kruger shows an exemplary work ethic defensively on top of his defensive zone awareness and he comes back hard regularly to support his defensemen."

In seven regular-season games with Chicago last season, Kruger was held scoreless in limited ice time, but tallied one assist in the Stanley Cup Quarterfinal series against Vancouver. He scored 35 points (6G, 29A) in 53 games with the Swedish Elite League's Djurgarden in 2010-11 before coming to North America.

Behind Kruger, two members of the Hawks' 2011 draft class -- center Mark McNeill and winger Brandon Saad -- also made the list, as did six currrent members of the Rockford IceHogs in Jeremy Morin, Brandon Pirri, Kyle Beach, Shawn Lalonde, Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen.

Not included in the ranking were players including defenseman Nick Leddy and forward Ben Smith, who were not in consideration because of their time played in the NHL. Just missing the cut were former first-round picks Philippe Paradis and Phillip Danault, part of the system that the publication says boasts "one of the better collections of forward prospects in the league."

Below is Hockey Prospectus' complete top-10 ranking:
1. C Marcus Kruger
2. LW Jeremy Morin
3. C Mark McNeill
4. C Brandon Pirri
5. LW Kyle Beach
6. D Shawn Lalonde
7. RW Jimmy Hayes
8. D Dylan Olsen
9. LW Brandon Saad
10. LW Kevin Hayes

That's 5 new forwards there, TBO. I was gonna question that but after looking at the roster, it just might be a reality. Olesz, Mayers, Carcillo, Brunette and maybe someone like Bickell could be handed their walking papers.

But until then, lets hope that Kruger, Smith and maybe a Morin or McNeil step up this year.

Yeah TBO that's really surprising until you put it into context...

Damn we're loaded for a really long time.

I really like Kruger and I hope he gets a chance to center a line on Madison (which I believe he will if Bowman's and Q's comments are to be believed), but I DON'T see him as a two-way center. To think of that little dude playing defense is almost laughable. I can see him doing some poke checking, but he doesn't strike me as a little guy who will try to light you up like Martin St. Louis.

Still all that said I agree with them. He's a pimp.

hitting isnt the only thing that makes someone a 2 way forward...Hossa is a 2 way guy and barely hits

And btw, WTF happened to Kyle Beach? I remember seeing stuff that had him guessed as the rookie of the year last year and he completely regressed in the minors. didn't do squadoosh. Scoring went down, penalties went up, he fought with teammates. He completely fell off the map.

I wonder if they didn't tell him that we needed some grit on the big team and that would be his quickest way to the show...

Whatever happened, I was disappointed. I thought that guy was going to be the next big thing for us.

I think your concern is valid, but Kruger is practically the same listed size as Bolland (<10#s lighter).

The Rockford guys on here have pretty much said the same thing; he is a mess.

Pretty simple if he can put it together and prepare to try for a spot in the bottom six.

Krueger is also listed as exactly the same size as Guy Carbonneau. Doug Jarvis was smaller... not going to go on -but backs up Iago's point about size not being relevant and having a historical basis in fact.

Hitting, alluding to Tbo's comment, he's right -what makes defensive play are little things like taking away the best angle towards the net, stick checking, winning faceoffs etc. Don't have to be big to strip a puck...

Otoh too, Krueger could maybe use a little bulking up, but he is young ... no worries. It isn't critical that the Hawks rely on him this season for that role.

Hossa is also a wall. Hahaha. Why doesn't anyone worship Hossa on here? No one can take that guy off the puck.

The game-winning goal in Game 6 vs. Vancouver happened because of Hossa's ability to fight through 3 Canucks and still maintain possession of the puck. He's ridiculous.

Everything I read about Kruger sounds good and I know the guy is very young, but I can't think of a player who was less noticeable on the ice in the games he played than Kruger. It felt like I didn't hear Foley (or any other broadcaster) mention his name during the entire season.

Seemed rather silly to, what with considering it had been tough to get some members to agree on simple math; getting into solid winger play seemed like a complete waste of time.

However too, when it comes to 81, if you have to convince people of his net worth -and they can't work it out by watching the guy play -then the chances of one using words -probably is going to be lost on those same folks.
