Just a mile or so beneath the surface, near the south pole of Mars, there is a reservoir of briny water sloshing and churning below layers of ice and rock.
This subglacial lake, discovered by a ground-penetrating radar on the Mars Express spacecraft, is about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) wide and perhaps no more than a meter deep. Its discovery is the latest piece of evidence that suggests water was not only present on Mars in the past but is still flowing in some capacity today. The findings, if confirmed by future observations, would be the most significant discovery of liquid water on Mars to date.

The article I read about this said the lake is likely an extremely salty brine which would be hard for any life to survive within.

But who knows, we see life persist in pretty extreme conditions like at the bottom of the oceans.

There are similar lakes on Earth that do support certain microorganisms so it is not out of the realm of possibility.

I also wonder how big a deal it will be if we can find micro-organic life on Mars or elsewhere in our solar system.

I mean I get it.... you concretely prove life can and does exist in some form outside of Earth.

But in general I think most people accept the notion that life, especially micro-organic life, exists on planets aside from Earth.

I would find it very cool, but I don't think it would cause uproar...

Pretty much. The Nerd aspect of bringing back a Mars born bacteria is off the charts, but no way does it make a dent in the 2018 News Cycle.

Well...until that bacteria kicks off the zombie apocalypse in 2020.

Would a zombie apocalypse at this point really be all that bad?

I honestly haven't come to that conclusion yet. It is really a big sandbox but we are forming our opinion on optimism more than actual science. I hope we do find evidence of life outside Earth because it would make our Universe a hell of lot more interesting; and that is saying a lot.

I found this article interesting about what we really know from odds calculations of life......a big universe is just one piece of the puzzle and we can't draw conclusions on the chance of life outside Earth.

inb4 there's bacteria in the lake, we bring it back to earth, and we have the black plague 2.0

but on a serious note this is awesome. I was reading about it this morning. I've been on a recent binge of watching space videos. Very intriguing.

Honestly, I would find it quite refreshing.

It would also make me feel less guilty about spending hundreds of hours in my lifetime on zombie movie/television viewing. It could be my Olympics!

A zombie apocalypse would be bad... lol everyone thinks they would survive it and get to rebuild the world while being a badass zombie slayer.

Let's be honest.... all of CCS would get eaten within the first 6 months.

So I guess, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Hot Alien Take: While certainly one needs to be a carbon based life form to live on planet Earth, perhaps any alien civilization does not share that characteristic and that is why they've never been here.

I've had much the same thought for a while.... we are searching for life modeled after carbon-based life as we know it on our planet.

What if only 1% of life in the Universe is carbon-based?

We have to go off what we know of course, but we might have our search so narrow it will make it difficult to find anything.

Maybe there's some really hot mermaids living in there. Definitely worth a look.

I think we did this exercise before and I fully admitted I am 98% sure I would be dead in under six days.

No weapons. No training. About two weeks worth of food in my kitchen on its best day. Living in a city with almost four million people.

None of that adds up to a survivor of any kind of major disaster...especially one that involves monsters trying to eat you.

We might be poison to them. King Xerxes of Andromeda might be like, "Carbon? GTFOH."

Much the same here... working in the loop if it kicked off suddenly I would be dead inside 12 hours.

If I was at home I would be dead inside a week.

If all went great for me, I would be dead inside 3 months because I would run out of insulin and have to go hunting for more.

If I turned into a master zombie apocalypse badass somehow, I would be dead inside like 18 months because the supplies of synthetic insulin would expire/spoil.

I would make sure to kill Tater before I went tho.
