Well, he said it was just his hard drive, so if that's it then replace it. Like I said, I am not a computer nerd, so I wouldn't even know how to install it. I don't know what formatting is, and I don't even think I know how to de-frag stuff.

Sue me.

Defrag...

Go to Start... All Programs, Accessories, System Tools...... Defrag is in there. Let it run and see how much you speed up your machine.

I thought it was a virus at first. Windows would lock up while it was loading, after the user pass word was entered. Only way Windows would load was in safe-mode.

Trial and error basically.

Spyware/adware programs didn't detect anything wrong. Wiping the hard drive and re-booting with a rescue disc didn't work either.

A friend who is tech guy swapped out the hard drive with one he had at home and that worked.

Edit: While looking for hard drives on line and reading reviews of the recommended replacement for this particular laptop it was apparent they are notorious for this.

are you noticing a clicking noise? Although the fact you wiped it and its still messed up is proof enough its the HDD. Usually when HDD's start to die you will hear a clicking noise coming from it when it tries to read.

It did click while windows was trying to load, although not in safe mode. Anyway, my tech friend let me keep the hard drive he installed, although its only 80g. Doubt my son will even notice. I need to re-install all the AV stuff and he should be good to go.
