Just curious has anyone bought a laptop off of eBay? (used or new)

Being an eBay nut, it'd be nice to lay in my bed & just browse.

The brand of it doesn't matter to me btw.

I have not...I've purchased two laptops in my life -- one from Dell.Com, and one from walmart. The first one lasted me 7+ years, and I only upgraded due to new programs and the fact that the hinge on the laptop broke....The walmart one is the one I'm on now, a Compaq...has lasted 2 years with absolutely no problems...and cost less than $300.

If I were to buy a computer online from someone other than the parent company, I'd check http://www.newegg.com if it were me.

Happy hunting!

So I wanna be careful.

There's far more techy people on CCS than I am...but honestly, for a first laptop that you only intend on doing general stuff with (microsoft office stuff, internet browsing, etc.) I'd just go to walmart or office depot or best buy and get a good value. If you wan to do more than that (photoshop, gaming, etc) I'd solicit advice from those w/ more knowledge than myself.

All depends on what you intend to do with it and what your budget is. If you're looking for something functional and cheap, a refurb might be a good option - if it is purchased from a reputable company and it was actually factory refurbed.

I've bought two this way and had pretty good luck (both from TigerDirect). As far as brands go, I've owned a bunch of them: Dell, ASUS, Toshiba, HP, Acer and an old IBM Thinkpad back in the day (now Lenovo). It's really about components more than brands, although certain brands tend to have higher quality components than others.

FWIW, the best laptop I've ever owned is the one I am currently responding to this with - Macbook Pro, 15" Retina, 2.7 GHz Core i7, SSD and 16 GB of ram. I love the fucking thing. Expensive, but for what I do it's perfect. The second would probably be the ASUS. After that it's sort of a toss up, but the Thinkpad was rock solid (for the time anyways).

It's probably better for you to explain what you want to do with it, any specific parameters you are looking for (e.g. large screen, long battery life, solid construction) and what you want to spend....and I'm sure some folks around here can get you pointed in a good direction for your purchase.

Ask Crys. He's the local technology expert after all. Though he may end up advising you to build a desktop...

Quick ebay guide for used/refurbished products.

This all goes on top of regular rules of shopping on ebay(seller rating, knowing what to buy online and who counterfeits what, ect.)

#1) Beware of sales with stock images. If you buy anything as is, you want to have as much info as possible, and that includes pictures of the actual item that is for sale.
#2) You also want detailed information about the product in hand, not standard information for the product. If the seller doesn't give it a personal touch by explaining how it runs, what they can do with it, any issues(honesty is always good), then it's a high risk purchase.

The one you linked is garbage, even at $80

Newegg is awesome. Their head legal dude is even better. His battle / quotes against patent trolls was fairly epic...for a guy in the e-commerce space anyways.

"We basically took a look at this situation and said, this is bullshit."

“Then they pop up and say ‘Hello, surprise! Give us your money or we will shut you down!' Screw them. Seriously, screw them. You can quote me on that.”

-- Newegg Chief Legal Officer Lee Cheng

I love that guy.

Knowing Joe, he doesn't have the $400-600 to get an entry level model. Thus why he's looking at the second hand stuff on ebay.

Along with buying a laptop, you also have to learn how to take care of a laptop. Contrary to the name "laptop", most of these notebook computers aren't designed to be used on a lap.

It'd be basically for browsing the internet. (i'm on eBay alot)

And two, my youngest sister gets pissed at me because I hog our desktop computer.

Having my own laptop would eliminate that.

Why don't you buy a tablet then? Unless you need the power, laptop is pretty useless for you.

eh I'd avoid Ebay for laptops unless they're brand spanking new out of the box. Go to best buy, HH Gregg, and Wal-Mart and do some research on what you want before finding a place to buy.

$76 for a laptop that's at least a few years past it's prime isn't a good deal to me. Not to mention the 600 series Latitudes weren't built very well and had a lot of problems with the motherboards and display inverters. Two of the three that I ordered were scrapped in less than five years.

I'd stay away...

Get an android tablet. You get it a lot cheaper and can browse the web.
