The Bobcats have waived center Erick Dampier, voiding his contract and allowing them to get under the NBA's luxury tax.

Dampier was in the last year of a seven-year, $73 million deal, but the $13 million for this season wasn't guaranteed.

Waiving Dampier leaves the Bobcats about $5 million shy of the luxury tax, a dollar-for-dollar tax owner Michael Jordan has said the team wouldn't exceed.

"We explored several trade possibilities involving Erick, but ultimately we have been unable to find a viable option that we felt made our team better," general manager Rod Higgins said. "Out of respect to Erick, we have decided to release him at this time so he may pursue opportunities with other teams prior to training camp."

Once he clears waivers, Dampier will be free to sign with any team.

I would take Dampier over Asik and Thomas combined.

Do you mean this figuratively or literally?

I think 12-13ft + 4 arms, 4 legs would easily be better for grabbing rebounds as opposed to Dampiers 7 ft + 2/2 combo of legs/arms.

Kurt Thomas will be perfectly fine for 15 minutes per game. Dampier would only show Noah what it's like to be lazy, and be out-of-shape. He's also one of those formerly overpaid players who thinks he's the shit, too. He once said that he was the 2nd best C in the NBA- behind Shaq.

he's a big body. he can rebound and defend. really he's just there to guard(foul) shaq and howard. you know thomas is 38 right? i expect him to be the new lindsey hunter.

After December 15th, Dampier would be a solid trade chip. One way or another, signing him is not a bad move!

Boozer, Noah, Taj, Asik have had there share of injuries and I doubt any of them will play all 82 games. Not only depth, but insurance.

he's better than asik. Celtics got bigger and older. Lakers and miami got better. orlando got older and worse, but they still have howard.

Getting another bigman to block shots and rebound is never a bad idea.

He wouldn't see much time if they sign him in their current state. Could be a decent signing if they trade Noah.

Dampier will sign with whoever pays him the most... at the end of the day, money rules. Especially when you are not even a 3rd-string center on the Bobcats.

I dunno, Dampier isn't needed on this team as much with Thomas/Asik being already in place.

That's just my opinion though..

He isnt..and he probably is still better than Thomas/Asik...but that wont matter to the front office. To the front office they have addressed the issue.

I'd happily take him but I just hope he doesn't go to Miami. That would be a disaster.

Watch this happen.

Also I'd just like to say this, Noah is not injury prone. He had 1 bout with plantar fascitis & a mild ankle sprain, that's it. Oh & he got poked in the eye & missed some training camp 1 year. None of this makes him injury prone. Everyone's talking like the kid is Penny circa 1998. As long as the fascitis is gone, which he says it is, I have no reason to believe he won't play all year.

Ofcourse it will happen. He will start for a contender and get much more next year. Its not like he needs the money, he just made 6/60 off his last deal.

He's not necessairly injury prone. The problem is that he hasn't played a full season at a high level. He was injured a big part of last year, out of shape most of 08/09 and not really a factor before then.

Well, I'd say, & I'm ballparking this, that close to 75% of NBA players are close to broke by the end of their careers, so believe me, money is always needed, unless you are someone like David Lee or Noah, who's parents are loaded up the wazoo. Pretty sure Damp's parents aren't Fortune 500 worthy. That's not to say he didn't save his money, but it's more than likely he's not loaded as one would expect.
