London to New York in 2.5 hours?

Holidaymakers may one day be able to fly from London to New York in less than three hours if this supersonic aircraft ever graces the skies.

The radical concept from designer Oscar Viñals would reach a top speed of Mach 3 (approximately 2,300mph) – cutting transatlantic journey times in half.

Viñals’ double-decker plane, called Flash Falcon, resembles a bird or even a spaceship and is intended to be an eco-friendly aircraft that is powered by nuclear fusion energy.

Flash Falcon would have a capacity for 250 passengers, who would enjoy comfortable cabins while travelling at three times the speed of sound, said Barcelona-based Viñals.

There is a reason the military doesn't put reactors on planes... It's called a crash.

It’s been 13 years since the Concorde – the world’s first and last supersonic passenger aircraft – was retired from service due to increasing costs and a drop in passenger numbers.

Hope they also fixed the massive radiation issue.

it says it's eco-friendly so maybe!

I'm guessing that implies the fuel economy per head is respectable. But everything is still compared to retrofitted 747 fuel economy, so who knows how friendly that is. I'm all for supersonic travel, but everything I have read about the new ventures over the last few years downplay the problems of the past. Would be nice to just have the extra information. I know a former concorde flight attendant, and all these years after the fact and a few health issues that were hidden from the crew are still not being taken seriously.

Also, we don't have fusion reactors yet. Well, not outside experimental tokamaks and stellerators.

Teleportation should be a top priority.

I think if we can manage teleportation people should live with a bit of radiation poisoning...

Radiation is everywhere and the more they study it the more they are finding that higher background levels of radiation besides obviously direct exposure make no difference on disease or shorter life spans.

I swear people hear the word radiation and immediately just denounce it as bad. We experience radiation all the time it's not something to put in the fear column and act ignorant towards.

I'd happily accept some radiation if I could teleport to say Tokyo at a reasonable price. Add up all the time saved traveling and it probably offsets the time lost to an early death.

You gotta think, if we develop the technology to take your atoms and store them in a computer and then re-materialize someone in another location then we have the technology to store someone in a computer system, therefore we would more then likely be able to develop a system that allows us to live forever by storing our consciousness in a large inter-connected computer system.

I mean teleportation is kinda like the path to immortality. The only reason they didn't do that in Star Trek was because they made up some fluff that your patterns degraded after so long in the so called "Pattern Buffer".

Well that's assuming you store data in a computer like you suggest. I suppose another option would be to bend space and time and create a wormhole with the destination on the other side.

Yeah, I think this is more likely as it I don't see how you can actually de-materialize yourself and then be yourself on the other side, it would almost be like you were a copy of your former self. Like you die, but a new you is created on the other side with all your memories and experiences.
