No, we sat there for an hour and a half and talked about the moon and shit ...

Then maybe they just really didn't want you, or your skills weren't up to par. Clearly if someone is very valuable in their field they will be compensated for it.

Maybe this has run its course, but you should think about the minimum you we be comfortable accepting and give them that number. Business is business and there is nothing disrespectful about that. To me, its actually showing respect for the time both parties have invested in the interview process.

And people should never feel like they aren't in a position to negotiate. My friend has 3 months off every year from his job (only 3 weeks paid) because he negotiated aggressively from the get go during his recruitment process.

I need a little "2 cents" from you guys .... A year ago, I quit my career so that I could be home everyday with my wife and my now 3 year old daughter. I worked in the oilfield for 12 years with 8 of them as a supervisor. Needless to say, my pay was pretty decent compared to the chump change I'm currently making working my "town job". But I'm home everyday, stress free and pretty happy overall. I'm not gonna lie though, I miss the fat checks and freedom to spend without too much concerns of the "budget".

Anyways, opportunity arose from a local "oilfield" company and had an interview with them. It went well and I bring to the table all sorts of experience and knowledge these guys need in a supervisor. The catch is, it's away from home again .....

Here's the question .... They made me an offer this morning that is so goddamn low that I don't even know how reply. Without putting #ers down, we're not even in the same ballpark ..... How would you reply? Thanks but no thanks? Or do you give them a complete who/what/when and why explanation? I don't feel negotiating is even possible, that's how big the gap is.

Thanks in advance and to wise asses, no need to reply.

I'd tell em to raise the ante and they have a shot with you...Be honest with them. People appreciate honesty

Maybe this the teen in me, but I'd have told them my minimum salary requirements upfront if they wanted me back.

Regardless, good luck and this situation will work out for ya.

You're going to hate me. But I have pulled this maneuver with employees before. I never did it, just for the hell of it, or to prey on someone that is a weak negotiator. But I have done it, because the talent pool grew significantly. I hope in your case, it's truly not personal between you and co-workers/bosses.

I can't really add much advise. But I can suggest one thing to bring to the table. Line your ducks up for this "chat" and know what positions are available, or promote quick within the company. Your best ammunition is going to be your experience within the company, and not just your skill(skill means little/nothing in an employers market because they feel you can be replaced.)

If you see a transitional position within the company that you want, and you think they would consider you for, then you might be solving another one of their personnel problems and saving your job. Again, this is just 'in addition' to the good advice given. If you can get your foot in the door, treat this like a semi-interview and sell them on how you are on the same page, can make the company better, blah blah blah. Don't make this out to be a; You're making a big mistake, type of chat. That never works.

Replied with a thanks but no thanks unless significant increase in the salary is possible. I'm not really looking to leave home again anyways, I was just shocked at the moment with the really low offer. I thought I was gonna have to make a tough decision, ends up being an extremely easy one, lol
