Sign him or not? I've already seen us linked to him since he was released earlier today.

We can sign him for a league minimum deal with the Mets picking up his 6 Million he was owed from his Mets contract.

Probably an upgrade over a DeWitt/Baker platoon.

Nope.

He's getting up there in his age, probably doesn't have the range of DeWitt, and also won't steal too many bases this year (assuming he gets picked up).

DeWitt's range isn't good either. He's been terrible defensively this spring and wasn't great defensively last year either.

But was an upgrade on Theriot's.

There is no chance that Castillo is an upgrade defensively. The man has got to be pushing 40 by now. He'll have the same range, if not less than DeWitt.

He's 35 BTW.

And I think we should sign him, to the league-minimum contract he sounds like he's getting. Would be a low-risk situation and he could battle DeWitt and Baker for the rest of Spring Training.

Okay, well he's still old.

Even for just a rental, I think it would be a waste. It's just not that drastic of an upgrade to warrant it.

EDIT: In fact, I don't think it even would be an upgrade.

I figured they would.

I guess for only 400K it cant hurt to check it out....Maybe he just needs a new environment. Im not big on Dewitt at all. I like Baker against LHP.

That is what I expect to happen, an offer for a league minimum salary contract.

I wanted him when he was last a FA...but even then I thought it was the last contract he'd earn that he'd be worth...if it's for less than $1M/year, I'm fine w/ it...but if we come across some "competition" for a back-up 2b, he can go elsewhere.

You don't want Silva to make the team because you want to give Cashner a chance to pitch, but you want to sign a 35 year old declining second basemen to take away from the 25 year old improving second basemen?

I've always liked Castillo why not pick him up for the minimum and see what he can do?

DeWitt is nothing special, and I doubt he does anything this year. Cash is at least something.

For the league min, yes. Why not? It can't hurt and if it doesn't work, just release him.

DeWitt's probably not going to improve all that much more defensively. Offensively he might find some more bat speed. Castillo is on the downhill slope. He's only going to lose speed and range. Seriously, even the minimum is not worth even "seeing what he can do."
