Yeah, that LaHair guy... doesn't he know how bad he sucks? How could he break up a 3-hit shutout like that. How dare he take a 2-0 count and then take advantage of it like he might have the skills to play at the MLB level.

You would kind of hope that a guy whose only skill is hitting baseballs very very hard would do so when the opposing pitcher gives him a meatball to hammer.

Nah. I think LaHair definitively proved on one swing that he is the answer at first base.

... for the next two years, until he retires of old age.

great moment. I wish Cubs would value him like they do Banks, Santo and Fergie. Sosa is the best Cubs player all time.

I have a hard time calling an obvious cheater and liar (the cork incident is all you need to know on that) "the best player" in any circumstance.

Even without the corked bat and the apparent steroid use... if you go strictly by his numbers and performance, I'd have a hard time ranking him above Banks. He put up numbers in an era where the league was designed for offense. He also became a defensive and base-running liability as he bulked up overnight to suddenly become "Slammin Sammy". Banks put up HoF numbers in an era where the game was still very much pitcher-oriented. He was also an excellent fielder until his later days when moved to 1B... playing a critical defensive position at SS.

Pete Rose.

And I don't consider Pete Rose "the best player of all time" like many others do. I'd have a very hard time placing him in the top 20 in all actuality.

However, Rose bet in favor for his team, and did not alter lineups or make strategic moves to cause them to lose intentionally. There is 0 evidence of him betting against his team. His bookie even came out in testimony stating he did not bet against his team. Rose also didn't cork his bat or "allegedly" use steroids.

Oh, and... his transgressions.... happened while he was a manager, not a player.
