Ex-Bear Martellus Bennett likened quarterback Jay Cutler to an old flame he's ready to move on from during an appearance this week on ESPN's "First Take."
Co-host Stephen A. Smith, who notoriously belittles Cutler on the TV show, tried to set Bennett up for more Cutler bashing -- now that the tight end is a Patriot and no longer owes allegiance to the Bears -- but Bennett didn't bite.
"Nah, I appreciate Jay Cutler," Bennet said. "Over the last couple of years in Chicago, I caught so many balls I was able to make a lot of plays with him. ... I think the big moments is what's going to define him moving forward. Like beating Aaron Rodgers, those games are the ones he's going to have to really come in, those big moments when ... he has to make a big play.
"But, you know, I don't like to talk about the ex-girlfriend too much," Bennett said.
Of course, "ex-girlfiend" is not necessarily a slight coming from someone who refers to himself as a dinosaur and a unicorn.
"I think Jay's, he's a good quarterback," Bennett continued. "I appreciate my time with him. He does a lot of good things, you know, (it's) just progression for him, constantly growing."
However, Bennett's comments about his current role in New England perhaps could be interpreted as throwing shade at the Bears and other teams Bennett has played for.
"I don't really know my role in the (Patriots) offense yet because there's a lot of things they're finding out that I can do that people haven't let me do in the past, which has been very, very exciting, because they're expanding (it) and they're saying let's see if he can do it. Can he do this? Can he do that? So it's like finally getting the leashes off and let me go."
