To fuel the Garza-Barney package deal idea, from Bowden:

The Tigers are seeking a second base upgrade and would like to acquire Darwin Barney from the Cubs for a mid-level prospect.

If that's the case, Barney will stay a Cub.

There's no reason to trade him then. Until they have a replacement for him at 2nd. Don't get me wrong, a mid level 'spect is all the Cubs can get for him. I know that and does not surprise me. But he's cheap, under contract for years, and one of the best defenders at 2nd.

I don't think you trade Barney on his own. You package him in a deal to get a better prospect back. But since he's under team control you definitely don't want to just get rid of him just because. However, there are some random middle infielders in Iowa that could take his place in a rebuild. This is one of those situations where you trade him only if you can (relatively speaking) fleece another team for prospects, and the best way to do that is as an add-on.

Yes, exactly. Like to Detroit with Garza (it doesn't look like that will happen, tho.).

If Garza is shipped to Deteoit, Barney will go with him. The Tigers have some good pitching prospects, and the addition of Barney might be enough to get one or two.

I kind of half wonder if it might be possible to trade Dempster, Garza, Barney, and Vitters to Detroit for Turner, Castellanos, Bruce Rondon, and Rob Brantly.

I know Dombrowski keeps telling everyone that Castellanos is untouchable... but I don't buy it. He was dangling Castellanos this past winter (IIRC that it was Hoyer's insistence that Turner be involved in the deal... not Castellanos... that killed the trade talks this past off season). I also don't really see where he truly fits into their short term plans. Where is he going to play? I just think he's talking up Castellanos now to get his trade value as high as possible.

If we get this deal, then we can talk to TB about a deal involving Soriano (they were listed as being interested in him if the Cubs eat 85% of his salary or whatever) and Brantly or Castillo (Soto is at all possible would be preferred, but I don't see that happening) to get someone like Taylor Guerrieri and maybe Archer back.

I'd love to see them try it but I think this might be a bit too epic given the new market that's being shaped by the CBA. Though if you want to talk certain "immeasurables" (like how willing the Tigers are to overpay to win now) then anything goes. I guess we'll see within the next couple weeks.

CSN-NE is stating that they doubt they go for garza with what the cubs are asking for. they were on 670 today.

Jayson Stark said earlier that they pulled out of the Dempster sweepstakes but were still in on Garza. Prices are high from sellers apparently.

Rumor to take with a huge grain of salt, but this guy on BleacherNation called the Paniagua signing before I saw it anywhere else:
Ned Colletti is playing the Cubs – his target all along has been Garza. Lee & Reed are both available in that deal because Ned plans on signing Garza to a long term extension
Dodgers just finding out what the market was on Dempster to see who Cubs had targeted from their prospect list. Do not be surprised if Eovaldi & Lee & Reed are all included on deal for Garza if Garza & his people are willing to sign extension. Garza has told his reps he would like to get his family eventually back to California anyway.
Cubs will have to throw in others on the above as well – possibly DeJesus or Vitters.

I wouldn't. As of now, with Hamels and Greinke both not on the trade market and likely to be extended, Garza is the top SP available. Only Shields is relatively close, and Garza is having a slightly better year... and has a better overall track record. You could say Wandy, but I've always seen Wandy as less than what his stats show. Plus, he'll be 34 come January, compared to Garza turning 29 in November and Shields turning 31 in December.

I still think that Dempster will eventually end up in LA, but it's going to come down to possible extension talks between him and Colletti. If not, then the Cubs make him a $12.5M 1-year offer this winter, knowing he's probably going to get offers exceeding 2 years and $20M. That way, you still get he comp pick. I'd rather get a guy that's only a year or two away, rather than a pick and risk a development course that could take 4-6 years. It is a strong alternative, though.
