You can't remaster something, unless you were the original master, in this case, the NBA/TV station. You can digitize it, you can restore it, but not remaster.

/end pet-peeve.

I used to build recording studios for restoration/remastering. Don't mind my nazi-correction of a misused term.

we can remaster tapes if we got high quality equipment and programs. i am agree with you that usually we can only digitize record but there are professional programs that can analyze video motion and parameters to rebuild it with no noise or atrefacts.

unfortunately we can't get HD quality on this old tapes because they we aired in small resolution. We can record them in master quality, 1 game on 2 disc will be perfect with commercials and halftime. We can clear sound at least and video picture will be untouched if you got it in master quality.

I'm not in the business of converting Vhs into dvd..I just happened to record games as they came...I recorded them all on extended play so I could fit 3 full games per tape..They are old and have been stored in boxes for years..The ones I pulled out and sent to Jim at Mariabkcards played very well except for 1 tape with the Bulls vs. Clippers victory in early 94..He is trying to fix it with tracking techniques....I was wondering if you have Pippen first game back against the Suns where he schooled Barkley..That's one that I am missing from the 94 season..I AM TRYING TO LOCATE THE SEASON OPENER AGAINST THE HORNETS WHERE THE BULLS WON BY A POINT....DO YOU HAVE THAT GAME MATE????

I have a master VHS of this season opener game, the first (Bulls) non-MJ game of the era.

Different flaws on tape require different repair methods, and unfortunately software can't do this. You need a good eye and a lot of patience to correct the flaws.

As for getting HD quality, you can not create a higher resolution than the original source. However, if someone had the actual camera reels, you could use analog transparency to enhance the images damn near close to what we consider HD. It just wouldn't be true HD by any means.

What can be done, and this is becoming a popular method of enhancing old footage, is to create an analog grid. You would focus one quarter of the image per max resolution w/o loss, use whatever means of enhancement to clean the image up, and divide the film into sectors when you do the digital conversion. Each grid would make up roughly 1000x500 pixels. Because the master reels from the cameras don't do the overlays, you could restore the overlays later. What you end up with, is image quality that compares to a theoretical 10x clearer picture than what was ever broadcasted.

I know the NBA keeps an archive of it's reels starting in 1976. Teams are allowed to keep reels for 2 years, for their own use, so that is where it gets tricky, because not all games were endorsed by the NBA to broadcast, and this was done by a privacy agreement between teams, local networks, and different shares(which is an essential aspect when negotiating broadcast rights for local markets.)

So if the Bulls played in Denver, they might not have those rights at all to the master copies of the footage, because that was a tricky market for so many years.
Of course, everything I am talking about, deals with the Jordan era, and not so much now. I have only seen 2 master camera dump collections ever go public and for sale, and this was done illegally, and both were from old archivers that worked for SportsChannel Bay Area.

I have to add one more thing. If you plan on converting your VHS/Beta collections, don't do it in a hot humid area. You will curl the film and cause tracking issues. I know the off-season lands in the hot-humid months, but if you are wise, you will salvage the rarest of your collections for conversion to when it is very dry outside. Your A/C only helps battle mother nature so much.
