With what they drafted, I don't think Houston is in a need for another big.

That was what I thought too but perhaps they do not realize it yet. Taj Gibson would be the best big they have though (the thing he lacks most is a post-game and McHale prides himself on instilling it in his players). And Kevin Martin is their only big contract left on the books and they have also been looking to unload them.

Bulls are a stay pat team. I think you're doing a lot of speculating without taking that into account. Whatever year they got Salmons was the biggest move I can remember them making mid season in recent years.

If I had to guess, I think you'll be seeing Taj leaving with nothing in return.

With more thinking, what does Gibson offer that Ibaka doesn't already provide?

I really wish if the offer was presented that the Bulls would take it, but I don't see the Bulls getting offered that.

Good point. Gibson seems like too good of a player to simply be a throw-in in a potential OKC trade. He would help them with quality depth though for a half season rental.

So who would be their 2 then? Even in a three way trade, they'll be giving up rookie contracts and looking to resign Taj for more money. I'd bet McHale is much more willing to take on projects than trying to retool Taj.

Taj leaving for nothing in-return is so unlikely in my opinion because of what happened with Asik. If the Bulls fail to trade him by the deadline, I fully expect them to amnesty Boozer and make sure they re-sign him.

Look at it this way- Houston is going to be bad for the next few seasons no matter what. Having (1st rd pick) Lamb, Shaun Livingston, and Toney Douglas cover much of the 2 spot next season would only ensure drafting extremely high. If the contract they need to shed is Martin's then they can be very confident that Taj will come for a better price. And with all of their young front-court depth, that equates to a lot of trade leverage.

I hate to break it to you, but I really don't think Asik was as highly thought of around the league as we thought of him. I think Houston was doing what they were doing to **** the Bulls cap wise.

ESPN overrates the hell out of Asik according to their dumb player ranking list. Asik definitely had value but the Bulls decided that trading him would have hurt their chances of winning a title last season. This year, that decision will be made easier for them because they should know there isn't a chance in hell of that.

Though I like the idea, I seriously doubt that OKC would pull a deal like the one in the OP. If I'm OKC, I'm keeping Harden, tax or not. OKC is a legit title team RIGHT NOW with a young core (that includes Harden) that will only get better in the next few years. Unlike the Bulls, I don't see the Thunder wanting to dump a quality player simply because of the luxury tax. Furthermore, Harden gives them a lot of lineup versatility since he can provide pseudo PG type playmaking skills as well as dynamic scoring...something that I don't think the Thunder take lightly.

That said, a guy like Harden is pretty much exactly what the Bulls need (minus the choking in the Finals perhaps, but whatever). However, if such an opportunity for that kind of player arose, I'd be extremely shocked. The only trade scenario I see going down is a Richard Hamilton dump which will probably result in a lost draft pick as well (though our draft picks tend to be low valued anyway) which would be sad to see, not because we love Rip or that draft pick is valuable, but because management wants to get under the tax that bad. There's a possibility for a Taj trade, but I don't really see teams giving us a good return for him. He's more likely to be Omer'd at season's end sadly.

I like the free agent possibilities too much this next offseason, to ponder a trade this season that could improve the team now. A 2014 draft pick(or better) for Taj is a sad way to see him go, but it would give us the cap space with all of our other options, to sign a max player.

Not saying every player listed is a max contract player, but here is what we are looking at.
Ellis(P)
Evans(RFA)
Harden(RFA)
Iguodala(ETO)
Mayo(P)
Nick Young
Tony Allen
Ben Gordon(P) (I know you 3 ******* want to quote this and just bold this part)
Josh Smith
David West
Milsap
Carl Landry(P)
Dwight Howard & Bynum possibly on the market again.

Thus why I don't see the Bulls attempting any trades to improve by mid-season. Something between now and the deadline would have to change significantly from the information that we have now).

How can anyone say trade Taj before trading Deng?
