I believe I saw it was 20% over during the offseason. Still wouldn't risk ending up hurting yourself before the arbitration clause and the rest of the little contracts they have to deal with NH, maybe Hendry and the Rockford boyz

10% is the official number you can go over.

- and that 10% would be off of the actual cap - not the virtual one after paying out the bonuses.

However I think that maybe the team wanted to see where RFA offers might come from -and for how much they'd be in for -they must have gotten wind of this ballpark of a figure- and figured they had to drop Ladd and choose what they got back instead of just a pick. It is making more sense now. Things aren't really so bad- but they still need to fill both goalie slots one way or another. I'd be ok with Crawford -or even the other guy - they'd have to be better - or at least less streaky than Huet -not to mention infinitely cheaper.

I'd say scratch Modano off the likely list unless it comes down to him waiting out until the Hawks can send down Huet. Even then things may be too tight.
