My wife's Grandfather was born in Poland and named Stan and he was called Stosh. Of course my wife's Dad Ben was occasionally called that too. I just think it's a friendly name for a family member. Poland is close to Czech so I suppose it could be both.

Those pierogis looked good!!

Get well Stosh!!!!

Just to be clear I don't think it is just Polish.

I believe Stan is Czech. At least I seem to recall that from somewhere.

I think in the european theater it is pretty common like Dick is here for Richard.

Can anyone confirm that?

Again...he's Slovak, not Czech:

Article on Stan Mikita,

Anyhow, Slovak and Polish all have the same language root (Slavic root), and given the propensity for People of that area to have pet names, It wouldn't suprise me if "Stosh" was a nikname for Stanislav in Slovak as well.

Yeah my mom is 100% slovak and my grandmother on that side always called my grandpa "yo" or "zep".

The zep is weird because my grandfather had an oddly close relationship with another single woman who was italian (her daughter is my moms best friend to this day). Like this broad was his best friend. It amazes me my grandma didnt have a problem with it. but my grandma called my grandpa zep because thats what the other woman called him (zep/ short for Gizzepe (i cant spell that shit) his name is Joe, so thats italian for joseph like Yosef(pronunciation) is slovak for joseph. I never heard my grandma call my grandfather "joe" once in my entire life, and shes dead now so I never will.

Mikita on road to recovery

Stan Mikita, the Hall of Famer and Blackhawks’ ambassador, has great news to share with his legions of fans.

“It looks very clean,” Mikita said Friday. “That’s what the doctors told me, and I am very thankful. Jill and I always had a happy home, but it’s even happier now.”

Mikita was diagnosed with stage one oral cancer earlier this year. He underwent 31 radiation treatments at the base of his tongue, lost some weight over a period of months, but not his optimism.

“I was told at the start that the outlook was good,” Mikita said. “What they do now is amazing. The doctors, nurses and oncologists who treated me have been unbelievable. It’s been an emotional time for me, and after I went in the other day to be examined, and got the results, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. My weight is still down, but I’m gaining a few pounds back, and my voice is stronger. I’m playing some golf, if that’s what you call it.

"Most of all, I’m grateful to the people who looked after me and supported me. I don’t have to go back for 90 days, and I’m looking forward to the hockey season.”
