I can't be the only douchebag that goes through phases of being addicted to Mafia movies and documentaries can I? Every five damn years I get obsessed with them. Watched Godfather for the 67th time last night which was it's usual god damn marathon. Now about to sit down and do Godfather 2 (which I believe is still the better film). Godfather 3 is just too damn good to watch again so won't bother. Anyways anyone got any suggestions for some possible Mob movies and documentaries I may have never seen. I have seen a lot including old made for TV movies which most often suck balls, but Gotti was actually decent back in the day it came out on HBO.

I don't want suggestions about the ones we have all obviously seen like Goodfellas and Mobsters (which by the way now is fucking horrible but back when it came out it was gold...so much untrue bs in that one).

Hook me up. RATTTTTTA TAAAAAT TAAAAAAT!!

There was a film I once saw about Meyer Lansky but for the life of me I can not find it or remember the name. I know it was pretty underground but I remember liking it. Wasn't the shitty made for tv movie about Lansky that Richard Dryfuss was in...that was shitty. Would appreciate it if anyone might now Lansky films. I have searched online but can't find it.

Casino, Scarface, that's all I can suggest. I still haven't seen the Godfathers. Gonna download em tomorrow. I actually just watched Scarface for the first time in it's entirety. I've only seen it before in parts on TV or at a buddy's house.

Scarface is epic one of my all time organized crimes films for sure.

Be careful with Godfather if it's your first time watching it. Remember it's a pretty dated film and it does move veeeeeeeery slow at parts. Not really a film where you want to be distracted during either, as there is some pretty subtle dialogue that if you miss it then the story can get a big confusing esp in the second half of the film. Its easily a movie you could break down into 2 halves also as it is long and can be difficult to watch for first timers.I actually prefer breaking it down into halves and watching it that way. Movies just too damn long.

The Drop.

You'll love it

That is going onto tomorrow nights list. Thank you sir forgot that it was even out there. I'll give Gandolfini his right deserved viewing. Funny thing..wasn't that big of a Sopranos fan. Enjoyed the early episodes but it dragged on to long for me as is usually the case with me and tv series my attention span just quits!!

I saw AMC is making a short series about Luciano, Lansky, Bugsy and that era. I'm anticipating it big time and expect great things from AMC launching that story. Could be really great. Also see there is another Luciano film in the making also interested in hearing more about that.

Pretty sure the Lansky film you are seeking is Once Upon a Time in America w/James Woods and DeNiro.

Once Upon a Time in America is pretty good. A little slower than some, but good

Recently watched A Prophet which could be consider a Mafia flick.

If you want to see how the genre started, check out Little Caesar (1931), The Public Enemy (1931), Scarface (1932), Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) and White Heat (1949).

If you don't mind subtitles, Le Samourai (1961), Army in the Shadows (1969) and Le Cercle Rouge (1970) are really good.

Mean Streets (1973) is Scorsese's first major film and one of my favorites. Lee Marvin is good in Point Blank (1967). If you've got four hours to spare, Once Upon a Time in America (1984) is worth the time.

The Untouchables (1987), Miller's Crossing (1990), Carlito's Way (1993), Heat (1995) and Donnie Brasco (1997) seem like obvious choices, but no one's brought them up, yet.

The Untouchables is one of the worst movies ever. Connery was good but the rest sucked. Worst role I ever seen Deniro play.

You know, for years I was touted that movie as being this awesome thing. It was a REALLY REALLY good movie. So I finally watched it on Netflix a few years ago...Disappointed in it. Not to mention it strays so much from the real story.

Miller's Crossing is very good.

Miller's Crossing (1990) is my favorite film. Ever. It's the Coen's masterpiece in my opinion.
State of Grace (1990) is an overlooked Irish mob film with tons of names. Violent, gritty. Intense shootout at the end.
The Untouchables (1987) is one of my all time favorites. Mamet's writing is powerful.
Heat is more of a heist film, but still very good.
I agree that Godfather 2 is the best of the three, but Godfather 3 fails in so many ways.
Fresh (1994) is a very good inner city gangster film. Giancarlo Esposito's (Breaking Bad) performance is top-notch.
The Krays (1990) is a British underworld story.
King of New York (1990) is very good (but dated). Tons of recognizable faces in this film.
Things to do in Denver When You're Dead (1995) is a crime film more than a mob film, but dated. If you dig mid-90s looks, this is one to check out. It really screams 1990s.
I personally think Scarface (1983) is overrated and a bad film. It's almost plays like a bad comedy when I watch it now.

More recent films:

I thought Lawless (2012) was a very underrated film. It's a beautiful looking movie.
The Lookout (2007) is more of a heist film, but well done.
Brick (2005) is a great written film. Less to do with the mob, but more of a murder-mystery. The dialogue is spectacular.

What I have seen as a trend in Hollywood and New York are the lack of the mid-budget films. These are the crime/mob films you saw so much of during the 1990s. 10-25 million dollar films that were low on special effects, but gritty and well written, well acted and directed. They're nearly extinct today.

I love The Departed. And those early Cagney movies mentioned by WCL are pretty fucking awesome.

I loved the Departed, too. Have you seen Infernal Affairs? It's a Chinese movie that the Departed was based on, and a lot of people say it's actually better. I've been meaning to check it out.

Can't say that I have. I might look into it though, is it subtitles? I'm not real big on subtitles.
