It has to do with you shouldn't offer advice about a city you never lived in.

I've been there numerous times though. Enough times to know that the city has little parking spaces for a lot of cars. Enough times to know that crime is high and the infactrustue is aging. Enough times to know that while it's a great place to visit, it's not a great place to live.

So maybe you should stick to the should i visit chicago thread and butt the **** out of should i live in chicago thread with your shameless, uninformed generalizations

Good stuff guys. Appreciate it.

In that case move to munster indiana :shibe: :)

**** that. Three Floyds is overrated.

Cons: highest sales tax, high if not the highest gas prices, shitty public schools, shitty infrastructure (expect to pay for comcast if you want reliable internet and cable), traffic, and I've heard chicagoans are the most arrogant and smug pricks on the planet compared to joliet. Pros: was born here and moved back 9 years ago and kind of love it. Can't speak to where to live on the s side but there are some nice areas on the nw side that are affordable

NW side is just so far away, otherwise I'd be all over it. Don't wanna be driving an hour (or likely more) to work every day. I'm hoping to cut down on the cost of gas and other things (groceries, in particular) by doing a lot of my shopping in Indiana which is about 2 blocks from my office.

Everything is more expensive in the damned city.... I like working downtown, a lunch and some beers out a couple times a week.... but I chose to buy a house in the suburbs and invest in property rather than pay rent in the city... I've been bitched at by many people though because living in the city for 4-6 years and dumping a shitload of money into rent is apparently the only way to go at my age.

For me, the benefits of living in the city were not enough to justify the financial cost for me long term, especially at the salary I was at when I was looking to move out on my own. I work alot, often WFH after the regular work day, and in general I tend to be a homebody.... I can do that paying a mortgage on a house in the suburbs.

I don't think this is gonna be a long-term thing for me, either. I certainly intend to move back to the suburbs one day when I feel like putting some roots down. But with no such plans any time soon, I think I'm ready to give Chicago a shot. Only intend to sign one-year leases so if it's not my thing I'll be able to bail rather quickly.

Nice.... I am just being realistic about where I was at when I decided to go out on my own... single income... buying a house in the city would have been cost prohibitive even if I wanted to so I would have had to of rented and likely would have needed to find a roommate based on my salary at the time.

Also my entire family is in the suburbs near me, so I woulda had to commute back to the suburbs for every family thing that comes up, that was another big problem in my mind.... I don't wanna do 3 hours of driving for Thanksgiving/Christmas.

Hence the reason why I'm trying to stay on the south side. All my family is down here in NW Indiana (as well as my job), so I figure I'll be coming back here every now and then. And I've spent enough time driving through The Circle to know that it's something I don't want to do consistently.

Why? I have family and friends who live in the city who have said some of the same things I've just said. I know there are positives to living in the city as well. However the points I posted in the previous thread are mostly true. Maybe slightly exaggerated but true.

It's not the beer ... it's more that the people who work there are a bunch of assholes.

Four or five years ago, they were the only place making craft beer. Not the case anymore: there's a TON of good beer out there. My tiny little hometown just a few miles from Munster has three breweries in its downtown area now, making pretty good beer.

Fair enough. Never actually made it out to the brewery

Then what exactly is the problem? You don't really need to live in a city to know what it's like, especially if you have made numerous trips there.

No, you do need to live there to understand it.

It's the getting up everyday part and living with the traffic, dirt, failing infrastructure, culture, politics, etc Until impacts your entire life you dont understand the impact, your just a visitor

Questions for all the CCS folk here.

Considering a move to Chicago in the fall when the lease is up on my current rental. Been in the suburbs my whole life but I've been spending a fair amount of time up there in a few rec leagues and am getting the itch to give it a shot.

I'll likely be staying south of The Loop, as my work is all in the south suburbs, and I want to avoid fighting that traffic at all costs.

Should probably add that I've got no kids and no wife to worry about, so there's nothing holding me back from that perspective.

For those of you who have lived in the city, what are some of the pros/cons? And if you moved in and remained there or moved out, what led you to do so?

Bridgeport. Check it out. I had a girlfriend there when I was living in Nor Cal and so I spent long stretches at her place. Cool girl, cool area. Jump on the highway and you are in the city in 5 minutes. Walk to White Sox games. Her rent was insanely cheap, on the RIGHT side of the tracks. You can name your price depending on what conditions and which side of tracks you wish to live though.

For good reason. He has a job, no kids, no lady.

He can afford a small apartment there if he looks. Lots of duplex's and triplex's with floors available.

I just took a glance at sale prices for homes over there ... average price is right around $400,000. Holy ****, never would've expected that.

Rent prices aren't bad though. If you look hard enough you can get a 2-bedroom place in the $900-$1,000 range.

There's a bar at 31st and Morgan called Maria's that's one of my favorite places in Chicago. Only been there a handful of times but moving to Bridgeport would change that in a big way.

I do understand all of that though. I listed most of that earlier, not because anyone said it in this thread, but because I've seen and to a certain extent experienced it myself. Sure, living in the city gives you the full experience, but you do not need to live in the city to know this.
Next up: tribar starts a thread on why you shouldn't be a black person. Don't bother; I reported myself

I guarantee you I will never start a thread like that. I'm not racist. Also, as I told Scoot, it's been 2 months since I've reported anything..
