Mine took a dump today, am currently using this shitty back-up.

I need an *oversized* screen to watch football and probably windows 8?.

Any input is appreciated.

In first with "that's obsolete"...

Sorry for your loss. Losing a computer sucks, even if they were old and pee on the carpet sometimes.

Budget?

And a monitor is usually sold separate. Unless you mean your laptop broke.

I did a recent contract for someone looking into budget systems for video servers(remote support nodes) and I have to say, I am throughly impressed with these higher end FM2 chips. +/-$300 desktops that have the power to play any modern game at medium or higher settings. It's indeed a good time to build a system.

I should also note. I'm not a Special person fanboy. :D The best gets my blessing, not loyalty over reason.

I can remember going down to the drug store to test the tubes when the TV took a shit. Does anybody bother to fix computers?

I've got an old CPU tower I use for a footrest sometimes.

What's your budget?

What does "oversized" mean?

Laptop or a desktop?

Do you feel comfortable assembling it yourself?

I fix old computers all the time.

That, or I salvage parts inside of them. If you only have one or two systems, it's a bit hard. But when you get your pick of the litter, before everything gets e-junked, you can do some fun things. My favorite, was about 13 years ago when people used to trash all of these old pentium pros. With the gold market going up, I held onto a good amount of different components that are worth a decent chunk in gold value. All of it, was just a matter of my own time.

Plus, a lot of old systems make great frisco-type hardware firewalls, and they make good NAS units. The old AT full-towers are trully awesome for installing two low power boards, and running 10-18 hard drives for network storage.

Dell charges around $800 to replace it, including windows of course. It's a laptop, and it's dead...as in hardware dead. Since I have no windows software to install, mine as well replace all of it. This computer is out-dated as well, running windows 7 on it from 2005.

And here I was thinking you were an economist, can you get me a discounted version of windows 8...preferably a multiple copy disk?. Kidding of course.
=)

I have a pretty good technical memory. So I can do a lot of things, Sunbiz. LOL

Anyhow, if it's just a laptop. Just go and shop one out, and buy. A 6-7 year old system is easy to replace for $800. Right now with the Windows 8 release, you can find a lot of discounts.

Intel Core I5 or better, could be a Dell, could be Toshiba, just shop it out, then research reviews or narrow down your findings, post them here. You'll get plenty of feedback.

I dropped it originally and broke hardware, just removed the rear housing with an eyeglass screwdriver. There appears to be several broken solder joints. Parts are cheap, the whole keyboard is $5. Perhaps I could have it repaired, as I would much rather spend the $800 on anything other than another computer.

If you don't have a problem with refurbs, you could probably get more bang for the buck.

What is physically wrong with it? The keyboard isn't working?

Dropped it and broke a few connections in the back, now I'm looking for a local guy to repair it.

No big deal I hope, if not will purchase another laptop with an 18" screen...preferably larger.

Broke a few solder spots? Eh, while it's possible, that's also unlikely of what would break. If you drop a laptop, you break some of the crystals in the monitor, you crack the housing, you throw the control arm off of the spindle in the hard drive, and crack variable PCBs.

Solder points are hard enough and soft enough to take a decent impact. But  I don't have it in front of me. Good luck.

Ya, it's tough to diagnose without physically looking at it. I guess what I am getting at though, is the screen, hard drive, whatever could easily be replaced for a lot less than you would pay for a new computer (if it is a nice enough machine to bother holding onto).

OK, then the crystal broke...it won't power on. It fell hard enough to actually crack the rear housing near the fan motor.

Either way, I can't fix it and the software is still good along with the monitor.

Okay okay, I'm not going to correct you on the details. But yeah. at this point, you're still better off buying a new laptop. You could fix it, but chances are, you'll have a new problem soon enough. You can't be sure of the damage, when computers are literally printed with components that use micro-tech or nano-tech(stuff that requires serious magnification).
