I have reached the end of my technical expertise, and decided not to call my old tech guy. So, best option is to simply take it into a local repair center that performs on-site service as opposed to sending it back to Dell...in China!.

I like that computer link Cryst posted, the one that looks like it would survive any construction accidents.

I have an Asus laptop and Asus Dark Knight wireless router. Both have been dependable. I bought the Asus laptop after reading they had the best reliability of all PC makers. I believe the top three were Asus, Toshiba, and Sony (outrageous prices). The worst were Dell, Gateway, and HP/Compaq.

Buy an Asus and don't look back. Mine cost under $500 three years ago and is still super fast and working flawlessly. It still looks cool too for being a 3 year old computer.

I'm looking into buying a Google Nexus 7 since it is made by Asus.

I just spent the better part of the afternoon with the owner of a repair company, Asus products were in his distributor catalog. He went on and on about Nexus parts, says they're the best in the industry currently. I agree on Dell, they're crap...mainly their shitty monitors. I had 2 go out within a year.

This guy knew his stuff, so I'll probably wind-up with a small Asus /Nexus or an Asus w/o a monitor. He has converters so that I can oversize the screen for movies and such, then I can add a 28" monitor.

TY for the product info, a shame that HP/Dell etc. have gone to shit.

HP spends more on their rack systems now, and Dell spends more on their blades. Ironically, ASUS gets contracted to build a lot of their boards. As for monitors, Dell monitors are fine, but you have to know which supplier is involved. There are only a few LCD manufacturers in the world, and Dell doesn't make their own.

Good desktops are the ones you build yourself.

My last 4 personal boards have been Tyan boards(I only run SMP, which means more than one physical CPU). They are a home-run hitting company. If you research well, Tyan will usually have the best server board on the market. But they will likely also have another board that is possibly the worst. So you wont see many people recommending a Tyan product to someone who doesn't have a lot of know-how with hardware. The same goes with AMD CPUs, not many people should recommend them, but for DIYers, you'll far and away get the most for your money and run rock stable forever(well, I should clarify, you could be a stupid DIYer too LOL!)

Re Dell monitors....the Ultrasharps are fucking awesome. Pretty much the best you can buy at that price point, or damn near the top of that list (although they have some higher end versions in that series, where at those prices there are better options). But those are mostly important for people who need the color accuracy to be top notch. Probably doesn't matter so much for someone not doing that kind of work on them.

I've never lost a computer. If it needs a new part, I get it and just upgrade at will along the way.
