Not gonna lie. I hate Rush with a fucking passion. But RIP. I know he had legions of fans. 67 is way too young. RIP

Brain cancer, like Gord Downie. I wasn't a Rush fan either, or Peart's Ayn Randian early lyrics, but he was a good dude.

RIP

Not sure why you hate them passionately but that’s your prerogative.
First concert I ever seen was Rush with Foghat opening. Hooked ever since

Been a Rush fan for years but never got to see them live. He was an incredible drummer.
I have no idea what lyrics he wrote or which songs they were. Were they controversial?

He wrote the majority of the lyrics for the band. No controversies in his lyrics that I have ever heard

I was fortunate to see them live 3 times in the late 70’s and they never disappointed.

He was the primary lyricist...a voracious reader his entire life, many of his lyrics were based on books he was reading at the time...the concept song 2112 was based on his reading of Ayn Rand's works; "one man against the system." That has alienated a lot of folks.

A reticent guy that was known to get up and leave the room if one engaged him and started gushing about how great a drummer he was, he was also reportedly extremely intelligent, and very well versed and willing to engage on just about any subject other than his prominence on "Top Drummers of All Time" lists.

In 1997, he lost his daughter to a car accident and his wife to cancer in 10 months. He went on hiatus from the band, got a BMW motorcycle and literally rode around the Western hemisphere by himself for a period of a few years, covering nearly 80,000 miles and visiting every corner of the two continents. He wrote a book about the experience I've yet to read.

Eventually the other members coaxed him back to Rush, although their output became less prolific after that, releasing only 3 albums from 2003 to 2012.

In 2014, he agreed to a final 40th anniversary tour with the band, although his passions had moved to writing books and riding his motorcycle. During the R40 tour, management arranged for a special security guard who liked to ride motorcycles. One of Peart's asks for the tour was adequate time in between each show on the tour that he could have a day or two to just ride. He planned long rides for these off days using internet maps to cover the most out of the way back roads all over the US and Canada. The security guard was interviewed during the tour and although some 30 years younger and in excellent physical shape, said he found it exhausting to ride between 9-12 hours on these off days, and had no idea how Peart managed to do the riding AND perform the shows as well.

After the tour, all the members retreated into private life...I had no idea he had been stricken with cancer until this announcement.
