As the title states. I'm about to get a new phone and am looking for some real world accounts. I have an iPhone 4S from cricket but will be getting a Verizon phone to combine with my girlfriends plan.

I really like the iPhone but I've noticed myself holding the phone reeeeally close to my face to surf the net and watch videos. I'm thinking about getting the samsung note 3 and would like some feedback.

First: spare me the usual fanboy garbage-from either side. I don't give a shit about company practices or the stupid lawsuits bandied about by each other. This is about the phones.

Second: has anyone made this switch and what are your thoughts? Yay, nay? Are the differences that big of a deal? On paper the Note 3 has what I'm looking for but, like I said, I need real world accounts. Is the size difference too much? Do the better specs really translate to actual usage?

I'm a droid fanboy. I've had both. The iphone is superior in typing/spell check

Also, I don't care about the gimmicky shit from either manufacturer. If the basic operating system is good or if it's crap, that's what I want to know

The os on both - stable. More free apps on droid. More apps on apple.

What are you looking for?

I need something with a bigger screen but I don't want to give up any stability with the phone/os. I've had my iphone for close to 2 years and have had zero problems with it. My sister has had several samsung galaxies over that same time frame and has had to get them replaced regularly. I'm pretty sure she has the Note 2(maybe the 3)now and it's been reliable for her so far

Get what you like, don't worry about fanboys, don't become a fanboy.

For instance, smartphones are obsolete for me. I have a carputer and tablet. All of the luxuries of having added features built into the phone, take away from the phone part, then tether me to the network in a way that I consider socially rude when I'm out. But see, that is just me. I like going almost 2-weeks without charging, super signal, using up less pocket-space(and I was using smartphones before people even knew what the hell that meant, my recent habits are only about 11 months old.) Just my preference, not everyone is the same(I'm in a minority). So why on earth do people like to gloat and rehash this debate on iPhone vs Android(which is Special person in itself, because Android isn't just ONE phone, it's a linux flavor that supports a TON of phones both good and bad).
Person A has bad experiences with iPhones, Person B has bad experiences with Androids(again, Special person, should be more specific). But ironically Person A thinks Android is the greatest thing ever, and Person B waits 2 days in line for every other apple product.

I'm not a fanboy, I just want something that's reliable and that's not going to keep me going back to the store every few months for a replacement.

The reason I really liked the iPhone is because it never, not even once, failed on me. It's doing some weird shit now but that's because I have iOS 7 and its designed for the waaaay more capable 5S.

If I can see that the Note 3 will be that reliable I'm gettin it, and soon

Then get the iphone.

I have had problems with all phones. I have fixed all phones. The one issue that still bothers me is how sharp the digitizer is on all apple touchscreens. When those break, they shatter. I had glass in my palm for two weeks from fixing an iphone 4(and 5 uses a slightly more shatter prone glass). But that's the worst thing I can say about iPhones is they can't take a beating. I can't talk about Android in the same manner because there are dozens of available options that have enough of a difference to matter for each individual. Some of them use the same style of glass that apple uses for their digitizer, like smaller nexus models, and those shatter too(simple physics, same materials, same result).

So when you say reliable, to what extent? What does that even mean? How often you can drop a phone and have it still work? Well, I hate to say it and even with the new(and old, minus revision 2,3,4 of the iPhone3G that had the new change which made the phones fall on their back far more often as well as a more flexible shield) iPhones, these are among the worst phones for that type of reliability. But when you mean using your phone for an 8 hour conversation, and it doesn't melt your ear(and becomes a domino effect on the phone's reliability), then avoid android phones with high clocked Adreno 22* GPU to better match Tegra competition(this is done to shave about $100 off the cost of each phone).

/in before fanboys get super defensive and stop being objective.

By reliable I mean not freezing, having major problems with the OS and/or having problems that render the phone unusable.

My experience has been this: everyone I know that has an iPhone have never had any reliability problems, or pretty minor ones if they have. But, a large majority of people I know with droid phones have had quite a few problems. My sister in particular ran through several galaxy S3's and finally ditched it in favor of a Note2. So far she has had good luck with it and really likes it.

If she had had terrible luck with her Note2 I would've just got the new iphone. But since she has had good luck with it I'm thinking about it, I just would like a few real world opinions before I pull the trigger

And fanboys, of either brand, please spare me the typical arguments...

Oh also, I'm very careful with my phone. I understand that dropping it will nullify any good things the phone had going for it

Note 2 is great. I've had it for about a year. It really fast, hardly ever crashes. Maybe three times in a uear have I had to pull the battery to force a restart, and those were bad apps. Videos are great. I watch netflix on it all the time. I know a lady that switched from an S4 to the Note 2 and loves it.

I do get the "boy that sure is a big phone. Do you actually call people on that?" But I dont care.

I've avoided the iphone because I don't like how the screen is small compared to other phones like the S4, which is the phone I have now. I like it.. no problems.

I think I'm getting close to making up my mind. My sister just confirmed that she hasn't had any problems with her Note2 and my father in law says it's the best phone he's ever had...

Lol I genuinely thought the Note phones were a joke on the commercials where the people are fighting about their phones.... I thought they were just making fun of the size of the screen on the Samsung Galaxy S4s... then I saw a Note someone had on the train

In any case, less than a year ago I upgraded from my Motorola Atrix 2 to a Samsung Galaxy S4 and have not been disappointed at all. I keep mine in a case with a screen protector and I drop it a fair bit but have not had any issues. IMO the screen size is about as big as you can go and still be comfortable with it in your pocket, I cannot imagine trying to jam a Note in to my pocket.

Only software issues I have faced are with certain apps, but I know that is my problem... not the fault of the OS if 3rd party apps are written poorly.

I've got a wallet case for my note. I would not be able to carry a wallet amd this phone.
