They are actually using deactivated HIV viruses to treat sickle cell as the virus carries the code that overrides the sickle cell mutation. Viruses alter genetic material so it is theoretically possible to have a virus that attacks genes more prevalent in one race.

But of course race is not biological but something that attacked melanin would in theory give the appearence of being race based.

There is evidence that viruses target specific genetic markers. That has been proven in the above.

Think what you mean to say is there has been no natural occurence of such a phenomenon but it has certainly been proven in the lab as the article points out.

Keep in mind viruses are not alive. They are just genetic material that that can replicate itself inside living cells. In evolutionary terms they were actually a substitute for sexual reproduction as a means to spread genetic diversity as this stray genetic material would infect a host organism, replicate and in so doing change that host organism's genetic material which would then be passed on to future generations.
