NHL and NHLPA Agree On Salary Cap

The Hawks have plenty of cap space. Especially if they deal Hjalmarsson.

Other professional leagues were forced to hash out a new CBA before free agency began, the NHL’s July 1 frenzy begins far before the September 15th expiration date. This could all be very messy depending upon the ceiling dictated by the next CBA, but for now, Kevin McGran reports that the league and players agreed upon a $70.2 million ceiling.

I can't see either side screwing teams come September 15th by lowering the cap floor after the July 1st date. So I'm guessing the salary cap will remain about $70 million.

The NHL really need to look at ending their CBA on June 30 moving forward.

I believe teams will not spend over 64m to 65m....we will see very soon. As I said before, if the owners objective in the new CBA is to lessen the player's share; then spending to 70m will be the Owners negotiating against themselves.

It's big news, it deserves more than just to be buried in another thread.

Actually it's no news. What does this mean?

There was word that the NHL and NHLPA had reached agreement on a $70.2 million salary cap for next year — at least under the terms of the current, expiring CBA.

From TSN

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399382

The NHL season could start without a new labour agreement if both sides agree to continue talks beyond the Sept. 15 expiration of the current deal.

NHL players association executive director Don Fehr said Wednesday "the players haven't considered what they would do on Sept. 15 or any other date if no agreement is in place."

Negotiations begin tomorrow.

With Toews literally right behind Fehr, the Blackhawks have to be comfortable knowing that their Captain has their back in more than one way. Might help if guys around the NHL see that leading into free agency.

Good question. I always thought the NHL Players got a bigger piece of the pie than the other leagues, not sure what else they could want. Or that the owners didn't like the current CBA just for that reason. But if revenue was like they said, and the Cap was going to 70 mil before the NHL declined to keep the current CBA another year, then it will be interesting to see what route the NHLPA takes.....

At that point another lockout would be completely assinine at the rate player salaries are crazy, which was the excuse for the previous lock out I thought.

And yes Trev, 99% of the time my wife is right. That's how that works. You'll learn some day.

I don't understand how this is any different from the previous news?

Yes, there was word on that a long, long time ago now. This guy is late to the party. The key part of that statement being...under the terms of the current, expiring CBA. Once again, nothing has been determined.

I just don't get why they have the cba expiring so close to the start of the season. That really should change. It should expire end of June or early July. That gives some time in case there is a lockout or strike to get things figured out.

Not really. It was just decided by the NHLPA yesterday so I'm not sure how he's late to the party. Read the recap of the meeting.

Nice spin though.

The NHLPA voted on several issues yesterday. One was to allow the NHL and NHLPA to continue with the season, if both parties agree, long after the CBA negotiations are still in process. So theoretically there could be a start of the season with no current CBA. Which means the 70 mil would stand as they in no way could force teams to go down at that point. Would be a messy situation if they did.
