NHL and NHLPA Agree On Salary Cap

The NBA came out with a rule in the 80s titled the Larry Bird Rule. It basically allowed a team to re-sign one of their own players even if it meant going over the cap.

This was to allow teams not to be forced to let their players leave simply to stay under the cap. The NBA figured that it would be better for the popular teams to retain their stars if they so chose.​

Someone, doesn't matter who. Needs to go to these fucking CBA meetings with a bat. NHL says 47% hit'em with the bat. The NHLPA says 57% hit'em with the bat. Do this until they agree to 50% until the end of time.

I like the idea, but that #1 would have to be bumped to maybe 2 players as the NBA has roster of 12 and the NHL 20.



Again, I'm in favor of a rule that would allow teams to get their worth from a prospect, instead of letting them bolt to a better team at age 25.

I don't believe there's a limit on how many players you can exercise that option on per season.

In light of the NHL's initial offer to the players union -- one that the New York Post's Larry Brooks believes is more accurately described as a"declaration of war" -- how should the players respond when negotiations resume in New York City this week?

According to Brooks, the NHLPA's starting point ought to be at the exact the opposite end of the spectrum from the owners': Elimination of the salary cap, a payroll tax for teams that spend above $80 million and free agency after three seasons of service.[/background][background=transparent]

"This is not an initial good-faith proposal" from the league, Brooks writes. "This is an immediate attempt to measure the willingness of the players to fight."[/background][background=transparent]

If the NHL gets its way on some of the key demands outlined in its initial proposal to the players association, the big winner -- besides league owners -- could be Russia's KHL, according to Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal.

"To use an Oilers example, why would Nail Yakupov be willing to sign for five years on a contract with a base salary of less than $1 million when he could expect to make much more money much sooner in Russia -- particularly if, upon the completion of his five-year entry-level NHL deal, he could look forward to five more years of restricted free agency?" "Even if he were willing to do so, it seems likely that future drafts would see European players increasingly consider the Kontinental Hockey League as a viable option."[/background][/background][/font]

Don't assume the NHL is headed toward another lost season based on the league's ambitious first CBA proposal to the players.

The contents of the initial offer -- described as a "declaration of war" by one veteran hockey scribe -- shouldn't have been all that surprising, according to business and law expert Eric Macramalla, who tells the Ottawa Citizen that the NHL's starting point resembles early owner-player negotiations in North America's other major leagues.[/background][background=transparent]

Macramalla notes that the during its early CBA talks a year ago, the NBA originally asked players to accept 46 percent of revenues, down from 57 percent -- exactly the same situation as the NHL -- and that in the end, the sides agreed to a 50-50 split. Not that that will ease the fears of hockey fans: An 11th-hour deal was barely saved the 2011-12 basketball season, which started nearly two months late.[/background][/background][/font]

There's one thing NHL fans have going for them when it comes to avoiding a lengthy work stoppage, according to Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski: Television.

We already do --- Its called "NHL Network", and from what I hear, it was free with the cheapest cable package available.
