While in the gym this morning, I asked another member if she was using a piece of equipment a cup was setting on...in English of course.

The response was 2 sentences, in Spanish.

My reply: "No hablo Espanol, habla Ingles?...translated=I don't speak Spanish, do you speak English?.

While I am fairly bi-lingual, I'm not about to accommodate the Latin American community. When I resided in the Dominican Republic, I made it a point to learn their language.

Then she answered me in broken English.

We've had residents living in this community for a decade that still cannot speak our native tongue.

Is it unrealistic for me to expect these people to make the effort?.

Maybe she is a student there learning English?

Maybe she is visiting?

Maybe she just moved there?

Maybe it was her way to say **** off?

Think you're running a bit too far with this.

If she was just visiting than fine but if you want to live in this country you need to speak English fluently before you move here. Lose any accent you have too.

I have a lot of friends/family who teach in the Texas and Illinois school systems and they're always talking about this. You've got kids who have lived here their whole lives that still have serious problems with the English language even going into Jr. High. Not all of course... but enough that it becomes a day to day issue in the class room.

Classroom disruption because of language issues is a bit different than a random girl in a gym. Maybe the OP used a poor anecdote to introduce the topic.

I assure you this is not just an issue in Texas or Illinois, nor is it just an issue with Latinas. The world gets smaller every day.

We have free English classes at the Library, few take advantage.

I would add that there are also many adults that were born here to English speaking parents that have a poor grasp on the language.

Did you stalk her? Be honest. LOL at white people in a foreign country still wanting to be accommodated because they don't want to learn the 2nd most spoken language in the world (Chinese is first, English is third).

Tell you what Botbitch,

When they decide to learn the language, then maybe I'll care enough to learn first generation immigration concepts.

Eh, they know the language. They pretend not to when its convenient. Try to screw them on money and see how fast they comprehend.

Always classy to try and screw people out of money, especially ones that don't know your language.
