My hope is the release of the new series drives down prices on the old 1080 cards.

I am waiting and watching....

Yes they are gouging a bit, but they're also offering a revolutionary new graphics technology. This isn't a typical upgrade cycle of "just a faster card".

Anyway, I'm waiting for benchmarks, of which we've seen none.

I'm watching the 2060 and linux drivers regarding turning.

Would make for a fantastic low-power virtualization machine GPU if the rumored specs are close to true. I'd buy one in the first month, price gouge or not because that's how valuable it would be for a particular system.

hey Crys, im reading some articles about people sort of saying these 2000 series cards won't be worth the price.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2018/08/21/nvidia-rtx-20-graphics-cards-why-you-should-jump-off-the-hype-train/

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/wait-to-buy-nvidia-geforce-rtx-gpus,37673.html

What do you think?

I'm probably going to upgrade from my 700 series to a 1080 card regardless, but these guys seem to be oversimplifying the cost/benefit of the new 2000 series on the Turing architecture.

Seeing some used 1080's for ~$350 and 1080ti's for $500 now. That was fast.

I'm probably going to upgrade from my 700 series to a 1080 card regardless, but these guys seem to be oversimplifying the cost/benefit of the new 2000 series on the Turing architecture.

Two issues for you, and I'm making these points based on you using the cards on Windows and for gaming.

One, the 1080 is more than fast enough, but nVidia *always* gimps their drivers on purpose for older cards. It's just a matter of when, not if.

The second issue, *everyone* has been running into fab-time scheduling delays well beyond whatever they expected in the past. Remember, this card was delayed more than normal, and nVidia's reasoning was, because they had no competition, but that is actually BS and only fanboys buy into that argument. The fact is every chip fab on earth has gone through enormous delays transitioning minor tech advantages(that still pay off, so its still worth it), but we are in that phase where physical reality hits walls to how quick we can adapt new tech. And no, this is beyond the Moores Law stuff(which hasn't been relevant since 1999 anyways, but laymen love to bring it up as if it's still relative to anything, to which it is not). So that means diminishing returns, yes, which is why a 980 to 1080 is not a big jump. Hype is hype, every new card is OMFG new great thing(BS, it's not, except on super rare occasions). But a 780 to a 1080... well of course that's an upgrade. But lets say you had a 980 (and let's say two years wait), you're not really in a hurry unless you have a hole in your wallet. So that 2080 on sale (600ish) will actually get you more use and value than a $350 1080 if you really think about it, strictly because you are on a 780 now, and that lines up better with your upgrade plan. Since a 1080 user will look to sell now or upgrade in 2 gens, a 2080 will be comfortable for 3 gens. That is strictly going off trends that gens are no longer 1 year apart, but many years.

Makes sense?

2013 (700 series)
2014 (next)
2016 (next)
2018 (now)

So 2020? Or Are you going to wait until 2022(maybe it will be 2023 by then?) for your next card(as a 1080 owner?) At this point, the extra for the 2080 (and yes, I don't mean MSRP, but one on a reasonable sale) makes a heck of a lot more sense for a 780 owner.

Hate saying wait... Especially when a 780 is still ok, but... wait, or find a sale on the 2080. The 1080 was great when on sale, but not many liked it when the prices were jacked. Same with this. Either go all-now, which means you're beta-testing a launch product. Or just wait until the hype cools down, and it will. Thus sales will happen, and things will be slightly reasonable. Not a long wait. You'll have your card by the time it's too cold to enjoy spending time outdoors.

Keep in mind im a weirdo who buys gaming laptops, so im sitting on a 770M card right now.

If I go after 2000 series I would wait until the 2080M or w/e they would call it, comes out.

I'm not urgently looking for a new machine or new card... most of what im playing doesn't need it.

I've gotten old, I just don't give major fucks about being on the cutting edge of graphics.... I figured if I waited any gaming laptops with 1080 cards would drop in price as the 2000 series came out and then I would buy one.

However, I do want to buy a system and use it for 4-5 years, so maybe it would be better to wait on 2000 series mobile and eat the price tag so im set for a good 4-5 years.

Laptop is a different beast.

No way to speculate accurately without more leaks or just *official* release notes when it comes to mobile. And seeing how Turning uses more power than Pascal, I wouldn't wait on (or recommend) a desktop conversion. *Although* you could consider moving to an external GPU capable laptop and play those options.

If the 1080ti gets under $500 new, that shit will be a great deal. Or around $400 or less used and its a no brainer.

Laptops with 1080s will drop in price for like 2 weeks and then they will be gone. Vendors don't sit on laptops like they do with graphics cards. Theres not gon be that much surplus stock they have to flush. If you are trying to get a discounted 1080 laptop, you gon have to watch for sales obsessively. And even then, you probably aren't going to see insane deals.

yes da wife and kid make me prioritize other shit, but im cheap as **** too. u cant take the poor kid out of me psyche ..

but i did just buy n waste mula on another transformers masterpiece n 3 others bots to complete me nbk devastator.. dats how i waste da daddys entertainment disposables.

I have to disagree a bit.... they are making and selling those laptops, they will not disappear from the market overnight.

I can still find laptops with 700, 800, and 900 series cards.

If they manufacture the machines, they are going to keep selling them.

I do think you are probably correct on the price drop I might see.

I will steal your line to Aussie.... I am single, live alone, and make a very good salary.... I can afford it regardless, so one way or another I'll get what I want.

Oh yeah man, by all means. I was just making a point about stock and how they seem so manage to disappear that shit without big sales on the high end stuff.

At one point EVGA was selling 980 Tis for under $300 after the 10xx series came out.
