Let's go back in time for a moment. It's game seven versus Chicago. As you all know, the 40th season of the Vancouver Canucks was their best season by far. They re-wrote the franchise record books. They're facing their arch-nemesis, the team that knocked them out the previous two years in the playoffs. They looked so good in the first three games.
And of course, the next three were a different story.
I'm sure their heads were filled with hidden doubts that they would never admit to aloud. Still, they opened the scoring and tried to hang on for the rest of the game. They almost made it, only to have Jonathan Toews score shorthanded with little over a minute left. The doubts came rushing back.
All those were forgotten several minutes later when Burrows "slayed the dragon."
But what if he hadn't?
What if, say, Patrick Sharp had scored on Burrows' penalty earlier in overtime? Or someone else that we hate equally had scored for Chicago? It would have been lauded as the most epic collapse in the history of the game. As a President's trophy winner, getting out in the first round is already embarrassing, but losing to your arch-nemesis, especially after being up 3-0 in the series, would be a thousand times worse. So what I want to know is; what would have taken place had the Canucks lost to Chicago in game 7? Would Luongo have been traded? Waived? What would happen to the Sedins? Would Alain Vigneault keep his job?
And another thing: What would you have done? Angrily renounced your Canuck-fan-ism? Burned your jersey? Become a more bitter, cynical fan? Or remain reluctantly optimistic?
What if Burrows hadn't slayed the dragon?
