Going for it on 4th instead of trying for a FG was purely about pride and consistency. Never mind actually looking at the context of the situation, something any decent in game manager has to do. You have all the momentum in the universe, ALL of it. That last thing you want to do is to mess with that in any way, last thing you want to do is give that team and that crowd anything to buzz about, anything to use to spark anything. So you never take the chance there, in THAT context of being up, but doing just that---giving them a something to use to try to get back in the game. You kick the FG, run off the freaking field and kick off so that you still have that energy and momentum and confidence. Especially if you are the Lions for god sakes.
Even if he missed the FG it would have been the right call.
That one cost them the game because I believe if they had kicked the FG and it was good (high % it would have been), the comeback would not have happened. It started everything.
That coach made one of the more idiotic and prideful decisions I've ever seen in that context. What a fool who doesn't seem to understand context.
