Ok.........who can explain in terms a simpleton(me) can understand how they manage to make seeds that are guaranteed to be female. And autoflower seeds as well.

Feminized seeds are created by using chemicals to induce pollination in female plants. They then pollinate other female plants, and the resulting seeds, or 99% of them have 2 x chromosomes., thus female.

Autoflowering are plants crossbred with Ruderalis (an auto flowering wild cannabis) to produce seeds that flower 2-4 weeks after germination.

So technically they are lesbians.

Well, not exactly. It's forcing a female plant to be a hermaphrodite, and pollinate like a male. The other females being pollinated are assumed to be straight, lol. But because it was not a natural hermaphrodite, but chemically induced, the likelihood of offspring being herms is not increased.

I had a White Widow that went hermaphrodite on me. I cut it down. If I had let it run its course it would have pollinated my other plants and the resulting seeds would have been female?

Possibly, but with the same genetic predisposition to turn hermaphrodite.

So the chemicals they use stop the predisposition to be hermies? So it is basically just a straight female plant they force to turn *** (Pence)....lol so they can produce female seeds. I bet these straight female plants would have been pissed being forced to grow a dick........

Yes I know I am being stupid. Been cooped up way to long. But thanks for the information.

No, the chemicals just force herming. Because the herming was not natural, but forced, the genetics passed on are not those of a naturally occurring hermaphrodite.

Exactly....they took a perfectly straight female and forced it to grow a penis. Makes sense now. Thanks

Spray it with silver thiosulfate to block ethylene so they produce male flowers instead of female.
Some people use colloidal silver but that's more stressing to cause hermaphrodite than complete male (and it takes a lot more sprays).
No male genes are carried in the pollen so the seeds have a very strong tendency to produce females.

Might be helping out another friend do a grow room build. He is interested in gavita led. Do you guys recommend led at all?

If you are going to go LED. The only successful ones I have ever seen were COB (chip on board) self assembled kits. I believe he used samsung LEDS, I am sure you can buy them assembled, but you can buy the components and assemble the exact board you want for significantly less money if you go that route. You will save money on the electric bill and the light bulb bill for sure, but there are some give ups as well.

Have a friend that did a setup that grew great quality, he had to actually turn down his intensity a bit because his light saturation was a bit too high. The problem that he still has, especially compared to any HPS grow is in size. His being a medical grow, for personal use meant that he wasn't going for maximum weight, so he didn't mind the smaller plants. He grew enough (legally via the New Mexico grow rules 8 Immature and 4 mature plants at one time max) to keep himself certainly over supplied, but not as much as if he had used HPS.

That, as far as I can tell, is fairly standard across the LED grow world still. Some people claim to be doing just as good as when they had HPS, but I haven't ever seen that out of an LED grow.

So to sum up, it is possible, but you should be looking at doing your own board setups rather than buying prefab lights. I know that he did a shit ton of research into what exactly to buy and how to assemble etc and it worked pretty good. His power supplies were outside the room and only the LEDS were inside helping to keep the heat down. He had bought 3 or 4 pre-assembled lights and none of them got him the results he desired. They did barely ok on the veg side but didn't produce good on the flower side.

Had another friend that tried the LED's in two different pre fab forms, and switched back to HPS because the results just weren't there.

These were all people doing personal medical grows.

The LED's made in the US are good. But they are expensive as ****. The ones from China suck and they advertise false spectrums. I use CMH. I use the Philips Master 3100 bulbs. Gavita's are pretty expensive compared to CMH. If I CMH bulb goes out it is about 90 bucks to replace it. If a Gavita goes out there goes a grand at minimum. Here is a good article comparing the two.

CMH grow lights are much more affordable in comparison. When it comes to power consumption and the power bill, LED's only save the grower about 15% on the power bill compared to CMH fixtures. However, the LED grower will use less power for cooling, but that savings depends on other factors in the grow space.

Closing Thoughts on CMH vs LED
Obviously, you’re comparing CMH vs LED. Like I wrote above, both LEDs and CMH grow lights are effective at growing plants. CMH grow lights are great for commercial cultivations and hobbyists with enough space. They produce bigger denser buds, and they offer a rich list of options. On the other hand, LEDs are perfect for hobbyists with smaller spaces like grow tents. And they’re great for people growing in spaces with lower ceilings. Also, LEDs are great for under canopy lighting.

For my buddy the cost part isn’t a big deal to him especially right now corona has increased the price per pound. He’s looking at led cause he’s a scared little ***** about getting a visit even though it’s legal to grow 72 lol. The drop in electrical usage keeps you off the radar. But everyone’s response is you won’t get the weight or why fix what’s not broken. Weight is definitely the goal here

1000 Watt HPS is tried and true, although if his main concern is power consumption and staying off the watch list. that CMH might work for better bud production while still reducing overall power consumption vs. LED.

I honestly have zero experience with CMH other than what I have read from @truthbedamned links. We were talking about it earlier in the thread I think.

CMH has a better light spectrum and uswes less energy than HPS. My son's light is HPS and he wishes CMH would have been around when he bought his. My 4x4 tent uses a 315 watt CMH bulb.

I don't know Gavita other than seeing their name along with a bunch of other corporate names to avoid (including General and HLG). HLG seems to be the one that gets the most love around.

You're way behind the times. COB is old. Quantum Boards are the new in thing. Technically take that big inch square of COB and spread it out over a larger surface.
Instead of one bright square inch you get the same amount of light that's spread out over square feet.

I vegged with COB LED floodlights. They worked great until I threw another plant into the mix, then I could see how spotlighty they were. No such problem with a Spider Farmer SF2000 QB.

The LED's made in the US are good. But they are expensive as ****. The ones from China suck and they advertise false spectrums.

Only so many companies in the world make the boards and they're Chinese. Others buy those boards and put them together as the greatest thing to ever hit the planet.
About the only real difference is spectrums and/or how the colors are arranged.

I got SF because they were easy. Because they are easy on Amazon they've been jacking their prices up where I bought barely under the price that would've made me get HLG. I do like SF's spectrum better, but now their prices would have me go to HLG or look on Alibaba.
As long as they say they're Samsung and are believable I'd get it.

I got 8oz from a 2x2 square x4' high, 3 plants. Not the tightest buds but it was way over crowded in there. Weight is definitely not an issue.
I've seen grows on a SF FB group that had tight buds. Maybe a HPS/CMH would've made mine tighter, but they would've also caused heat issues in that space.
If you want to wait 8-10 weeks I just started flowering the same variety's clone, single plant. If LED still sucks at making tight buds I'll have no problem saying it. Although if I still suck at thinning the plant out I'll admit that too.

He had multiple COBs as far as I know it was pretty spread out. He built his own board there was a panel that was probably 3x3 that was filled with LED's

The stuff he bought that was pre put together was garbage, this was his best results using LED. This was done a couple of years ago, so I am sure the tech has advanced since then, but the question remains how it stands versus HPS.

HPS is the baseline for indoor growing in my opinion.

Yeah, wait a week or two and quantum boards will be old news. One thing you don't want with LED are blurples. I've seen grows from them that are every bit as good as my T12 florescent bulb grow in the 80s.

From what I'm seeing from other people quantum boards are standing on their own merit. Especially if you get someone stuck in the past who insists on burning 1000w no matter what they're using.
They say my 200w SF can do 2x4 flowering, I think 400w SF4000 can do 5x5. If you put 1000w worth together you're getting way more coverage than a single 1000w bulb.

My floodlights are 25w each. I could see tying a bunch of those COB boards together and having good results through flowering if the grower stays reasonable (unlike me). I'm thinking of turning mine into space buckets.
They definitely do great through 4 weeks of veg.

Mine looked good at the start of flowers, they just dried fluffy and most of the little buds never grew into a mass of big bud (right side of the picture) that would impress anyone.
I don't remember if I posted this picture here, this was about halfway through flowering. Hopefully I learned a little (hopefully I get a bunch of feminized seeds from this pheno to practice with).

Interesting read here.

They actually say that CMH is better overall if you include vegging, but that HPS is still superior in flowering. Simply because of the red spectrum it produces. It is also cheaper to buy initially, although that is made up in lower energy usage and less frequent bulb changes.

Also the whole wear protective eye goggles and cover any open skin because of the UV-C rays is a little scary as well.
