Its a travesty how we treated Indians, but does anyone know how the British government, and the later Dominion Government of Canada treated the Indians in Canada?

They have blood on their hands as well, but the US was pretty damn bad. There are definitely things you can point to like the treatment of the Metis and the Red River Rebellion, but I think the way Canada has interacted with First Nation people as whole is certainly better than the US record with Native Americans.

One of the things that always fascinated me about the colonial period was the various rituals that European powers would go through when they claimed land in the New World. The French required the Native Americans to accept the French taking over the land. I mean they clearly viewed themselves as superior to the Native Americans, but they were the only nation that included the Native Americans in the process of claiming the land.

Ownership is also fascinating to me. The English believed that gardens and fences signified ownership of the land, and that was part of their justiification in taking land from Native Americans was that they didn't own it because they had no fences or hedges.
