Imagine how great he would have been if they had modern surgery techniques then. Both he and Butkus. It was kind of sad when they came back
and couldn't motor as well.

It would have been great but I'm still not sure that Sayers would have lasted any longer than he did. His running style increased his risk of injury. With today's faster, harder hitting linebackers and safeties I'm sure he would have taken more punishment.
All things being equal you see less and less of these 'pure' runners. Most these days are power style backs that can handle the weekly grind of football. With few exceptions the runners that are successful today can blast their way through, not just dodge and dance. Those guys don't seem to last very long in the NFL.
