CHARVARIUS WARD vs WILL FULLER
With the suprising news of All Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins being shipped out of Houston, Watson will be looking for a new favorite target. History indicates that will probably be speedster recevier Will Fuller. With Beshaud Breeland serving a suspension, Ward will have to step up amoung a very young and inexperienced cornerback group to keep Fuller from easily taking the dozen or so targets left vacant by Hopkins.
CHRIS JONES/FRANK CLARK vs TEXANS OL
Outside of left tackle Laremy Tunsil, the Houston offensive line is still very much suspect. Deshaun Watson was sacked on 8.2% of his dropbacks last year, a staggering 44 times (for comparison, Mahomes was sacked on just 3.4% of pass attempts). Unfortunately for Houston, they have a problem in the form of Kansas City’s defensive line. The unit is the deepest on the entire roster for the Super Bowl Champions, and are led by All-Pro caliber pass rushers Frank Clark and Chris Jones. Kansas City will feast early and often on the Texans beef. Expect that pressure to be a deciding factor in this one.
TYRANN MATHIEU vs DESHAUN WATSON
This is the best matchup of the game in terms of skill levels. Deshaun Watson is an elite level quarterback who makes sound decisions and is a proven playmaker. Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best safeties in the NFL and a legitmate DPOY canidate. If the Chiefs defense is working well (primarily that the corners are doing their jobs), Mathieu will be given relative free reign to utilize his instincts against Watson, and the two should duke it out throughout the evening. Both will win some battles, but who wins the war could go a long way to determining the outcome in this one.
After being in the NFL for almost two decades now, this will be the very first time the Houston Texans are playing in the NFL's season opening game. They will do so by playing the Chiefs for the third time in less than eleven months.
