Icehogs 2010-2011 Award Winners

Most Valuable Player: Jeff Taffe Through 78 games, Taffe paces the IceHogs with 63 points (28g-35a). His 28 goals also lead the team and match a professional career best, originally set with the Rochester Americans during the 2009-10 campaign.

Best Defensman:Brian Connelly was named the IceHogs Best Defensman for 2010-11 after amassing 51 points (11g-40a) through 78 games. The 24 year-old set an IceHogs AHL single season record for most points by a defenseman, breaking Danny Groulx’s mark of 40 points in 2008-09. The blueliner is finishing his second full season with Rockford, accumulating 16g-73a-89pts in 165 career games with the IceHogs.

Unsung Hero:Kyle Hagel. After signing a contract with the IceHogs for the 2010-11 season, Hagel immediately became involved in the community. The Hamilton, Ont. native started a reading program for fourth and fifth graders at Kishwaukee Elementary. Outside of his regular visits to the school, Hagel also frequently volunteered his time at Jr. IceHogs practices or visiting local hospitals. On the ice, the 26 year-old has chipped in 5g-8a-13pts and racked up an IceHogs AHL record 225 penalty minutes with two games remaining. Hagel also set a franchise-high 32 major penalties in 2010-11.

Man of the Year Award: Kyle Hagel

Rookie of the Year award: Ben Smith received the . The former Blackhawks sixth round pick (#169 overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft has registered 31 points (19g-12a), in his first professional season. Smith has been hot down the stretch for the Hogs, accumulating 10 goals and two assists in his last 15 contests. The Boston College product has also received three recalls to Chicago over the course of the season, skating in five games. The rookie forward notched his first career NHL goal last night in Chicago’s 4-2 win in Detroit.

Heavy Hitter: Garnet Exelby. The blueliner has provided the IceHogs with a physical presence throughout the ’10-11 campaign. The 29 year-old shows 13 points (3g-10a) and 128 PIMs in 75 games for the Hogs to this point in 2010-11. Exelby has been a strong physical presence on the ice for Rockford all season.

Most Improved Player:Ryan Stanton. With two games remaining, the rookie d-man has 3g-13a-16pts with a plus/minus rating of +4. Signed as a free agent by the Blackhawks last March, Stanton has emerged as one of the top defensive prospects in the organization.

Probably why McLean was signed. They seem to just sign 1 veteran forward every year.

yea...McLean was playing in the Swiss league last year, so im guessing he signed here so he could get back to the States, and he has a chance of playing some NHL games in the event of an injury (god forbid)

I wonder if the Rockford/Chicago rivalry picks up this year with Chicago's new NHL affiliation.

Familiarity breeds comfort for Hawks prospects
Johns and Lavin – as well as fellow defenseman and Blackhawks prospect Shayne Taker -- were part of the Fighting Irish's run to the 2011 Frozen Four. That experience is still fresh in their minds as they take part in this weekend’s prospect camp at Johnny’s Ice House.

Brotherly love surfaces at Blackhawks camp
Jimmy and Kevin Hayes stood next to each other during their Blackhawks prospect camp practice session on Thursday. At 6-foot-5 and 6-3, respectively, the brothers certainly represent the size the Blackhawks would love to see in the future.

The Blackhawks have another brother duo at prospect camp in Alex and Terry Broadhurst. The two are staying together through their camp stay; and given their brotherly rivalry, they said that could lead to some angst.

Blackhawks' Shaw impresses at prospect camp
“I always got picked on,” said Shaw, who added that even the road hockey games with his brothers were intense. “They were always ganging up on me.”

Battling his brothers has served the 5-foot-10, 180-pound right wing well. Shaw hasn’t been afraid to drop the gloves in his Ontario Hockey League tenure, even if he’s been outsized. But that’s hardly the only facet of his game, and throughout this weekend at the Blackhawks’ prospect camp at Johnny’s Ice House, Shaw has shown a few of them.

How Beach is ahead of Smith, Pirri surprises the hell out of me.

Chicago prospects organiation ranked #11 in May
Strengths: Several years of smart drafting has led to Chicago having incredible depth at both forward and defense. The Hawks benefited from forwards Ben Smith and Marcus Kruger in the playoffs this year but the most impressive performance was turned in by rookie blueliner Nick Leddy who played with poise beyond his years. Big wingers Jeremy Morin, Kyle Beach and Kevin Hayes all project as power forwards with the ability to both score and use their large bodies to play an effective grinding game. The defense is headlined by a number of offensively gifted defensemen with the aforementioned Leddy leading the way. Weaknesses: Although Corey Crawford is becoming a star in the NHL, Chicago's depth between the pipes in terms of prospects continues to be the club's biggest weakness. Top 5 Prospects: 1. Nick Leddy, D, 2. Dylan Olsen, D, 3. Jeremy Morin, LW, 4. Kyle Beach, LW, 5. Kevin Hayes, LW. Lost to graduation: Viktor Stalberg.

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defensemen Logan Pyett and Garnet Exelby have both signed one-year contracts with the team.

Exelby, 29, brings over 600 games worth of professional hockey experience to the Red Wings organization, having previously played for the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) and Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) as well as the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and Rockford IceHogs (AHL). The 6-foot-1, 215-pound blue-liner was selected by the Thrashers in the seventh round (217th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to register 7G-43A-50P-584PIM in 408 career NHL games. A native of Ste. Anne, Manitoba, Exelby spent the 2010-11 campaign with the IceHogs where he recorded 77GP-3G-10A-13P-128PIM to go along with a rating of plus-7.

No Exelby for Rockford this season.

Here ya go Teebs

For Kevin, this is a chance to work out with fellow prospective Blackhawks before heading back to Boston College, where he played with Jimmy last season. For Jimmy, however, he’s hoping this weekend’s work leads to a potential spot on the Blackhawks in the near future.

“We’ll see what happens. I’ll try to get my game to the highest level and hopefully I have a shot of making this team,” he said. “You come in and you want to be competitive and you want to show everyone your game and hope to get to another level.”

Jimmy Hayes signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Blackhawks in March. His size is immediately appealing – the 6-5 forward weighs in at 233 pounds, just a few higher than what he calls his “playing weight” of 230. He decided to go pro after a great tenure at Boston College, where he helped the Eagles win the 2010 national title.
