Rockford, IL – Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced Monday that the Rockford IceHogs, members for the American Hockey League, have signed defenseman Ben Youds (YOWDS) and goaltender Carter Hutton to one-year AHL contracts.

Youds, 23, joins the IceHogs after completing his collegiate career with Minnesota State University – Mankato (NCAA). In 2010-11, the 5-11, 180-pound defenseman tallied 21 points (7g-14a) in 37 tilts for the Mavericks. He also led the team in scoring during the 2009-10 season, totaling 26 points and a collegiate career-best 23 assists.

“We’re very excited about the addition of Ben Youds as he impressed all of our staff at the past two Prospect Camps in Chicago and is coming off an excellent collegiate career,” said Bernard. “We look forward to watching his development over the next year.”

During his time in the WCHA, the Maple Grove, Minn. native compiled 67 points (11g-56a) in 145 contests. Youds was also a member of the 2006 USA National U-18 team.

Hutton, 26, appeared in 22 games for the Worcester Sharks (AHL) in 2010-11, posting an 11-7-2 record with a goals-against average of 3.01 and a save percentage of .902 with two shutouts. He also backed up in San Jose with the Sharks for 13 games last season. Combined with a short stint with the Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) in 2009-10, the 6-1, 184-pound goaltender has compiled a 12-9-3 record at the pro level with a 2.96 GAA and a .912 SPCT.

“With the addition of Carter we have added great depth to the goaltending position as he is coming off a very good rookie season where he not only spent time in the AHL but also at the NHL level in San Jose,” said Bernard.

“Both of these players bring exceptional qualities in the locker room and on the ice, but once again, their character is what stands out and that is why they are a part of our organization.”

Hutton spent his four-year collegiate career with University of Massachusetts – Lowell (NCAA) and compiled a 32-41-10 record with a 2.36 GAA and a .911 SPCT. During the 2009-10 season, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native was named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and the Bauer Goaltender Champion.

Rockford Ill. – Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced Wednesday that the Rockford IceHogs, members of the American Hockey League, have signed forwards Andrew Shaw and Rob Flick to one-year AHL contracts.

Shaw, 20, a fifth round (#139 overall) draft pick by Chicago, is the first of the Blackhawks draft picks from the 2011 NHL Entry Level Draft to sign a contract within the organization. The 5-11, 180-pound center spent the past three seasons playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Last season he led the Owen Sound Attack with 135 penalty minutes and ranked fifth with 54 points (22g-32a). In 20 playoffs contests he had three multiple-goal games during the 2011 postseason, which included an appearance in the Memorial Cup Tournament.

The Belleville, Ont. native played his first two OHL campaigns with the Niagara Ice Dogs. During his three-year junior career, Shaw totaled 41g-66a-107pts with 361 PIMs in 190 games.

“We are very excited to add both Rob and Andrew to our team as they bring not only energy and passion, but are also young men of high character,” said Bernard. “Both are coming off of great junior seasons culminating with both of their clubs playing in the Memorial Cup Tournament. Their high-energy and physical-style of play should prove them both to be fan favorites here at the MetroCentre.”

Flick, 20, was drafted by the Blackhawks last year in the fourth round (#120 overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Level Draft. He spent all three seasons of his OHL career with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. He finished fourth on the team with 57 points and led the Majors with 167 penalty minutes in 2010-11. During his time in juniors he compiled 99 points (46g-53a) in 181 games.

Flick and Shaw came head-to-head vying for a spot in the Memorial Cup Semifinals in May. Flick tallied the game-winning goal for the Majors in their 3-1 win over Owen Sound, while Shaw scored the lone goal for the Attack. Flick and the Majors made it to the Finals, but fell 3-1 to the Saint John Sea Dog’s.

Rockford, IL – The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Ben Simon as Assistant Coach with the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, joining Head Coach Ted Dent and assistant Steve Poapst. In addition, Andrew Allen has been hired as the organization’s Developmental Goaltending Coach.

Simon, 33, spent the 2010-11 season as both a player and Head Coach with the Sheffield Steelers of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League, steering the club to the EIHL title and finishing fifth on the team with 66 points (27G, 39A) in 62 games. Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the fifth round (110th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Simon notched four points (3G, A) and 47 penalty minutes in 81 career regular-season tilts over parts of four seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers (2001-04) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2004-05). BMO Harris Bank announced today it has entered into a long-term agreement for the naming rights of the Rockford MetroCentre and sponsorship of the Rockford IceHogs, in partnership with the Rockford Area Venues and Entertainment Authority (RAVE). This announcement builds on numerous commitments made by the bank since it enhanced its presence in Rockford last year.

The Rockford MetroCentre will now be called BMO Harris Bank Center. In addition to being the home of the Rockford IceHogs, it hosts numerous entertainment, conference and community events and has been a cornerstone in the community since the venue's opening in 1981.

"This new opportunity allows us to take our support of the greater Rockford area to the next level," said Mark Furlong, president and CEO of BMO Harris Bank, N.A. "The Rockford MetroCentre has long committed to enhancing the overall quality of life in Rockford, and while BMO Harris Bank shares this same promise to our communities, we look forward to carrying on the tradition and enriching the city with sought after performances and sporting events."

"This is an exciting day for RAVE – and truly for the whole community – which benefits from the sports and entertainment at the MetroCentre," said Mike Dunn, RAVE Board Chairman. "The long-term commitment from BMO Harris Bank has been unwavering – from the sponsorship of the world's largest outdoor synthetic ice rink which brought thousands of families to downtown during the winter months, to today's announcement of the naming rights makes it a perfect example of a genuine partnership of an organization that cares about the individuals in the area."

"I appreciate the hard work of the RAVE Board, the management team, and our partners at SMG who helped to get this deal done," said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey. "The MetroCentre is a great community asset and today's announcement by BMO Harris Bank demonstrates the confidence they have in the direction of RAVE and our entire downtown. Having the world-wide credibility of BMO Harris Bank will help us to continue our work to expand entertainment and economic development opportunities in our community."

"This is a true community collaboration – bringing together a business that has shown an ongoing diligence in supporting our regional activities and initiatives with a organization that in the past 18 months has virtually changed the way people feel and think about downtown," said Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen. "The BMO Harris Bank Center is a great example of what can be done when the private and public sector work together for the good of the citizens."

"We are pleased to see the ongoing partnership that the Chicago Blackhawks has built with BMO Harris Bank continued with our AHL Affiliate Rockford IceHogs," said Chicago Blackhawks President & CEO John McDonough. "Our franchise is always motivated by our quest for consistent excellence and our partnership with BMO Harris Bank aligns with that goal perfectly."

"We have all benefited from the excellent entertainment and sports that is brought to our area's largest arena," said Loves Park Mayor Darryl Lindberg. "Today's announcement demonstrates a further vote of confidence for our region by a large corporation who is committed to the vision of enhancing our quality of life."

IceHogs' Dent thrives on communication, innovation

Ted Dent is making written notes and taking mental notes, but he is in the market for one of those hand-held recorders. As the new head coach of the Rockford IceHogs, he is full of ideas about how to send game-ready players from the American Hockey League to Chicago, and if those thoughts are secure in one place, so much the better.

“I can wake up tomorrow morning and go over my whole list of what I want to do,” he says. “And I can go over it again and again. Details.”

If being organized is a skill set required by one of the most progressive organizations in sports, Dent appears to be an excellent fit for the Blackhawks. At age 41, Dent has been entrusted with nurturing talent for a parent club that has resurrected itself largely through homegrown infusions. Some franchises view player development as an expense; the Blackhawks under the aegis of Rocky Wirtz and John McDonough view it as an investment. Results are evident—a Stanley Cup in 2010—and expected.

“That was made very clear to me at my job interview,” says Dent. “We want to continue a winning atmosphere in Rockford, of course. But our primary responsibility is to teach and prepare these kids so they will be in the NHL within two or three years.”
Dent’s meeting with Blackhawks management occurred in mid-July during the team’s annual Blackhawks Convention at the Hilton Chicago, where 10,000 fans within a hotel reminded him that hockey is relevant again in the Windy City. As assistant coach for five years — one in Norfolk, four in Rockford — Dent witnessed a regime change and a Blackhawk renaissance that created opportunity. Quality franchises lose quality people, which is why the IceHogs lost head coach Bill Peters to the Detroit Red Wings, where he will be one of Mike Babcock’s sidekicks. Dent says he “went at it hard” when the opening arose, and the front office in Chicago, as it does with boys in skates, promoted those who are worthy from within. So, Rockford General Manager Mark Bernard will have Dent as his head man, assisted by Ben Simon and Steve Poapst.

“It’s Ted’s time,” says Al MacIsaac, the Blackhawks vice president/assistant to the president. “He’s tenacious, intelligent, with great hockey sense and people skills. A student of the game who has paid his dues and proven himself.”

Dent was a gritty center at St. Lawrence University, where he graduated with a degree in sport and leisure studies. He played minor league hockey at Wichita, Johnstown, Charlotte and Toledo. His coaching resume, which includes Trenton and Columbia, along with Miami, where he was an unpaid volunteer for the Matadors, who, as we all know, relocated for one East Coast Hockey League season from Louisville, where they were the River Frogs. For five years, from 1999 through 2004, he was video coordinator with the Washington Capitals. When you say Ted Dent has done it all, don’t forget roller hockey.

“Two summers with the Philadelphia Bulldogs,” he recalls. “One year, our coach was Dave ‘The Hammer’ Schultz. And the other year, Al MacIsaac. We made $180 a game, and it was a good way to stay in shape. One thing about roller hockey: When you go to check someone, you’re on wheels, and there’s no stopping.”

A minor league coach is no longer an incidental facet of the NHL landscape. More than ever, according to MacIsaac, drafting and producing players is vital. A hard salary cap, the only one in pro sports, virtually guarantees roster turnover. Also, the AHL has become a breeding ground for upwardly mobile youngsters instead of a landing place for thirtysomethings on the downside of their careers. In two years under Mike Haviland, who joined the Blackhawks as an assistant in 2008, and three under Peters, Dent has helped a more than two dozen players graduate to Chicago, several of whom earned Cup rings.

“(Wife) Katherine and I have three children,” says Dent. “And coaching on this level is like watching them grow. You hate to see them leave, but, hey, that’s what we’re here for. We teach them how to be professionals, on and off the ice. Most of them, whether they’re coming out of junior ranks or university, haven’t played a schedule that we play with as many games. You have to monitor that. You have to instill professional habits, like sticks on the ice, not on the hip. You have to make a hard pass, not a soft junior pass. You might have a kid here wondering why a guy he skated circles around in junior is in the NHL. It’s about competing and work ethic. And you have to, at times, massage players.”

The NHL is like college. It’s one thing to get there, another thing to stay there. It’s no secret that Corey Crawford was discouraged when he didn't secure one of two goalkeeping jobs with the Blackhawks at the start of the 2009-10 season. Crawford returned to the AHL for a fifth year. Dent felt Crawford’s hurt and applied those people skills to which MacIsaac referred. Look at Crawford now: he’s No. 1 in Chicago with a new three-year contract.

“The proximity of Rockford to Chicago is significant,” says Dent. “Our guys see that packed United Center down the road and want to get there, badly. Which is good. And once they get a taste of the NHL, they don’t want to leave it, which is also good. Just because you’re an average AHL player doesn’t mean you can’t make the NHL. The Blackhawks. That’s quite a carrot.”

Dent, a listener, thrives on communication. He’s talked with Joel Quenneville about the Blackhawks’ system of defensive zone coverage and neutral zone forechecking. If a player is summoned from Rockford to Chicago on moment’s notice, there is no time to consult a manual. To that end, Dent is also planning to synchronize practice schedules. If the Blackhawks hold drills at 11 a.m., then the IceHogs should toil accordingly.

“It might seem like a small thing,” says Dent. “But if we can get our guys on the same body clocks as the guys in Chicago, why not?”

It’s just another detail for the new head coach of the Rockford IceHogs who is operating as he did years ago in roller hockey. Ted Dent is building up some steam now, and there’s no stopping.

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs, proud members of the American Hockey League and top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks, announced that they have signed veteran defenseman Brian Fahey to an AHL contract for the 2011-12 season.

Fahey, 30, brings 446 games of AHL experience to Rockford. Last season Fahey appeared in 60 games with the Hershey Bears, accumulating 4g-25a-29pts. The 6-1, 213-pound defenseman also made his NHL debut in 2010-11, skating in seven games with the Washington Capitals.

“Brian will be a tremendous addition to our team as he brings valuable experience and leadership to a young group,” said Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard. “We are looking forward to Brian not only being one of our go-to defensemen, but also teaching and being a mentor for our younger d-men.”

The Glenview, Illinois native has also played AHL contests with the Lake Erie Monsters, Hartford Wolf Pack, Chicago Wolves, Iowa Stars and Worcester Ice Cats. Originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth round (#119 overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Fahey attended the University of Wisconsin and played four seasons with the Badgers. He totaled 14g-28a-42pts in 156 collegiate games at Wisconsin.
