I believe you have your prorated information incorrect.
If a player passes through waivers and is unclaimed (sitting in limbo) or completely unsigned (ala Sundin) then a contract is prorated (counting down from day one of the season).
The salary cap is still in effect for trades. You just can't trade Bolland at the deadline for Malkin and call it prorated to squeeze it under the cap.

IF Emery signs, it will probably be for Turco dollars. 1-1.5m for one season.
Boyes would be a great addition. He can fit in basically any forward position and get you points. I just don't think the Hawks will get themselves into cap trouble just because they have an extra 3 million on the couch.
That money may be better served at the deadline.

I think you misunderstood me. If the Blackhawks have $3mil in cap space and they keep that until the deadline, they will be able to get a player/s that is close to $9mil in cap hit because at that point the $9mil cap hit would be prorated on a day to day basis for the rest of the year and it would equal about $3mil.

Obviously that goes the other way too. If they trade a $3mil contract at that point, than they only save $1mil in cap hit that year because they would have already used up the players $2mil.

Cap hit is done on a day to day basis in the NHL. That is why Leddy was sent down and up numerous, numerous times last year - to save cap hit.

thats correct

Team salary expenditures are calculated on a daily basis from the first day to the final day of the NHL regular season.
A team is in compliance if it has not already exceeded the cap for the season, and if it could carry its current roster without exceeding the cap at the end of the season.
Counted against the cap: All players on the active roster, injured reserve or the long-term injured list. Players who have left the team on a contract buyout, according to a formula that charges a percentage of the buyout against the cap.
Not counted against the cap?: Players assigned to the minors or returned to junior hockey after signing an NHL contract.
