So Jackson is producing even though his K rate is out of the world cant make top 50 but Shelby Miller of STL has a 6+ ERA in AAA still number #20. How that work?

Because whoever made the list isn't a Cubs homer? *shrug*

Possibly due to age as well.

Maybe because he's a 21 year old in the PCL?

Also because Baseball America leans heavily on scouts moreso than statistical analysis. Miller has got really good stuff and would trade just about anything to get him in our system despite the performance in AAA to date.

I don't see why Jackson falls from 32 to unranked though, seems a bit extreme imo.

Likely is in part to due with his continued contact issues and other guys really jumping up and playing well.

It's not just because of Jackson..the other players are factors as well.

Just because he's not listed on a prospect list doesn't mean Brett Jackson is complete shit, either :D

When the next WSD Top Prospects List comes out, hopefully we'll have a shitload of new talent... but then again, Garza is the only guy we'll be getting anything for so it wouldn't be likely :(.

Your best approach should be to realize that prospects are good to have around but that they have a huge failure rate. So when most of the guys on your list tank you won't be surprised, though it's okay to feel some disappointment.

Precisely. With how excellent the draft was last year (Baez, Vogelbach, Maples, Dunston, DeVoss, Zych, Marra, Scott) and this year (Almora, Johnson, Blackburn, Underwood, McNeil, Prieto, Lang) and all of those guys being very strong picks due to talent potential... they will be rated as excellent drafts in the long run if just 4-5 of those guys make it to the majors and fill significant roles (or end up in trades to bring back a significant player). That's 4-5 guys out of 92 selected.

I wrote a blurb about it once upon a time.

Why prospects? | World Series Dreaming

It's mostly a matter of maximizing the talent ceiling in your early round picks and playing the numbers game because you know about 90% of your draftees will likely never see MLB.

I think this is spot on. The guys that have passed Jackson up have shown progress... where Jackson's contact issues make him look like a guy that won't cut it in the majors at this point.

Jackson's going to slide even more come the post season rankings. There will be guys in that list who were just drafted and signed. The new first-rounders will almost always take precedence over first rounders from 2-3 years ago that still hold a ton of potential, but are kind of scuffling in certain ways. When the next lists come out, I doubt Jackson will be ranked in the Cubs' top 5 spects. (Soler, Almora, Baez, Szczur, and possibly the resurgent Vitters or Vogelbach could be rated higher than Jackson.)

The strikeout thing is going to be magnified in the majors but the fact that he's still OPSing over .800 (albeit in a league that's a hitter's paradise) should mitigate some of those concerns. Wish he'd get the strikeout rate at least under 25% but whatcha gonna do...
