CBS Sports NBA insider, Ken Berger, is reporting that the Orlando Magic would like to trade Dwight Howard to the Bulls. Magic executives believe the Bulls can provide a better trade package than the Nets, Mavericks, or Lakers, where Howard prefers to be traded.
The Bulls/Magic deal would likely include Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer, Omer Asik, and a first round pick for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu. While the potential trade makes sense for both sides, it’s unlikely to be executed because Howard has expressed an unwillingness to sign a long term deal with the Bulls. Dwight has also publicly expressed the desire to be “the guy” on his team. He doesn’t want to play second fiddle to anyone, and that might be the case with Derrick Rose on the Bulls.
While the Magic would love to keep Howard in Orlando, it seems very unlikely. The team’s executive are hoping the fact that Howard can earn about $30 million extra if he resigns with the Magic will entice him to stay, but it seems Howard has already made up his mind on leaving. Ken Berger quotes a league source in his article, saying “He’s telling everyone he’s leaving.” If the Magic don’t want a repeat of Shaq leaving them in ruins, they need to make a trade happen.
If the Bulls/Magic trade does go through before the March 15th trade deadline, the Bulls will be able to seriously challenge the Heat in the Eastern Conference…and if Howard, wisely, agrees to sign a long term contract with the Bulls, they will be NBA title contenders for the foreseeable future.
