If every professional athlete with some form of brain damage retired now, the leagues would be decimated.

That is the price to pay when you get paid like a king.

What the hell does being paid alot have to do with concussion's?

I dont think he should retire next a year or two off to get healthy sure but he is so young he could take time off to get right then come back.

That's just the thing. As it is right now, he may never "get right". Nobody knows. If symptoms keep recurring, coming back and sustaining another blow could be catastrophic.

Sidney Crosby suffers setback, may miss start of season - CTV News

Oh, and he is having symptoms again.

With all the research on concussions and the extreme danger of them, to state that he wont retire is just plain stupid. If he is still having symptoms there obviously is a problem.

He shouldn't announce that he's going to retire. If he does, he'll be forfeiting 16.5 million over the next two years. He can report to camp, fail the initial physical, and be put on LTIR. The Pens would then have his cap space to use to replace Crosby (yeah I know, laughable). And, in time, who knows; maybe his symptoms subside.

So essentially...

There are varying reports of Crosby having setbacks this summer. When contacted, his agent neither confirms nor denies whether Sid will be ready to start the season.

The press runs with the story and every writer shares their opinion. One says Crosby should retire immediately. One emphasizes the lack of concrete information given by all involved and turns it into the plot from a mystery novel of sorts.

On top of all this (the misinformation, the speculation and the general lack of facts given) we have the nature of head injuries in sports which is a science that is in it's infancy.

The bottom line is that nobody really knows what's really up- especially writers and fans not connected to the game. Regardless, it seems like levelheaded hockey fans can all agree that no matter what Crosby's health is at the moment, the utmost care and precaution should be taken (which so far it has been) and that the game is better with him healthy and active.

To retire at 24, that's just dumb. Taking a year or two off is allowed.
