Just a quick question to people who have an obviously vast superior knowledge of hockey compared to me....

Watching the Hawks game on Monday and Pen-Sens game tonight, there seems to be a lot more shots on goal taken. Is this due to rule changes that favor the offenses, or is it sloppy play? NBC showed a stat where it was 16-10 SOG in the first period. It just struck me as odd because when I see box scores it never looks to be that many in a regular season game.

What are you comparing the current games to?

After the lockout in 2004-05 (sad that you have distinguish it), some rules were changed to open up the game. The red line was removed as part of the two line pass violation and obstruction penalties away from the puck became a higher point of emphasis. Those are probably the two biggest changes.

I guess I would say early 2000's. I only really started to get into hockey this year, so maybe I have no clue what I'm talking about - which probably isn't too far from the truth.

As I believe Im close in age with you (34) the ERA that you were watching was a lot different. Rule changes are one big factor. Also the "fire and passion, grinders" are kinda going away more and more every year. The Euro style of play, primarily russia, has taken over the league in a nut shell. Has defense gotten softer? yep. Has the super talent of speed and skill come in the masses? yep.

One of the monster rule changes implemented after the 05 lockout is the attempt to reduce "clutching and grabbing" style of play (folks point to the Devils "dynasty" style). With the elimination of the red line, it increased the speed of the game tremendously.

Edit: as melt pointed out. :D

Caught a little bit of the Hawks-Wings preseason game, and I saw they have a rule change that it is a penalty if a player has a tucked in jersey. Can somebody explain why that is a penalty?

A long long time ago, in a league different from today, players would hide illegal equipment modifications. But they're enforcing the tuck now, because it's a uniform-code issue. Why they say it's a safety issue, is beyond me. Gretzky used to tuck a lot, I guess at some point it became tolerated.

Glad you are getting in to hockey. You should go to a few live games if you haven't already. Doesn't have to be NHL games either.

Anyway, one reason for more shots in the pre-season is the fact that it (like football) tends to be a little sloppier. A lot of guys are playing who will not be in the NHL when the season starts.

I've been getting inot it a little more recently, too. I have always likely it in person though, I have only seen semi-pro games (Danville Wings, Indianapolis Ice, which I just now looked up and saw they are the same team) but they are cool to watch.

I know Blackhawks tickets are not cheap but, in my opinion (and the opinion of several others), no sport has a better in-person experience than the NHL. If you're thinking of getting into the sport, you've gotta see a game in person.
