New York Islanders GM Garth Snow said he didn't expect to add any veterans to his forward lines, though he may be looking for an experienced defenseman.

Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank recently spoke with four NHL scouts who suggested Snow would shop around for blueline depth.

One scout told Botta he knew Snow had been trying to add a defenseman throughout the summer, going back to his failed effort to sign Christian Ehrhoff after acquiring his rights from Vancouver in late June. Ehrhoff went on to sign with the Buffalo Sabres.

Another scout claimed he knew “for a fact” Snow sent a training camp invitation earlier in August “to a pretty good veteran,” that was subsequently rejected “for now.” This lead Botta to speculate the target was Bryan McCabe, the best defenseman left on the free agent market.

The Isles’ lack of experienced depth on defense is a legitimate concern. Their blueline currently consists of Mark Streit, Milan Jurcina and Mark Eaton, followed by Andrew MacDonald, Ty Wishart and Travis Hamonic.

Snow's payroll currently sits about $2.3 million beneath the salary cap floor, though the Isles would become cap compliant if right wing prospect Nino Niederreiter cracks the lineup this season, as expected.

If he wants, Snow has more than enough cap space to add an experienced defenseman or two via free agency or trade.

That will stoke blogosphere speculation of Snow trying to land Long Island native Mike Komisarek from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bear in mind the Isles GM is likely under orders to keep payroll as low as possible, meaning there won't be room for a blueliner like Komisarek, who carries a $4.5 million per season contract for three more years, even if Snow sent salary the other way.

Snow’s best trade option appears to be the Sabres, who are rumored to be trying to move Shaone Morrisonn and the last year ($2.075 million) of his contract.

Besides McCabe, free agent options include Anton Stralman, Steve Staios and former Islander Chris Campoli.

This is only speculation to have a discussion around here. The Islanders are in need of a defender, and some have said Hammer could be the next to go. Would you guys make a move involving Hammer to maybe get our #2 Center? What prospects would you throw in? Would you trade Draft Picks?

It sounds more like the Isles are looking for someone with more experience than Hjalmarsson.

I don't see a move involving Chicago and NYI at this time.

I don't see the Blackhawks being a match with the Islanders...at all. Unless it is a 3-way trade I suppose. I also don't see the Blackhawks moving Hjalmarsson at all, or atleast actively looking.

I'd trade 'em Hammer for Tavares straight up, but they'd have to be blind, deaf, dumb, and snorting homemade crack off a dirty toilet seat to take that deal.

Bu bu but we can't trade hammer, he plays such an important role on this team.

I'd trade Hammer for a 2nd line center.

I'd probably do it. Maybe Hammer and a prospect...

I would hate to see Hammer leave, but honestly he isn't as good as people say. Campbell covered up for his mistakes a lot. He would be missed greatly, but having a real 2C would be awesome.

actually Hammer covered up for Soupy's piss poor defense.

Too much hate on the guy.

I think it was both covering up for each other and this year is going to be a lot different. I'm not sure how I feel about Leddy and Hjalmarrson paired up. I like them both, but neither is very experienced.

What makes you assume they'll be a pairing? I have my doubts.

I think (or thought) the Oil would make for a better trade partner.

I just assumed that they would be the second pairing.
Seabrook-Keith
Hjalmarrson-Leddy
Montador-Lepisto
This is just my guess...

As much as I want a real #2 center, trading another d-man like Hammer will weaken the defense.

Lalonde & Olsen aren't NHL ready.

Yeah, I wouldn't move Meatball right now.

I thought he sucked last year, but all things considered:

-recent D-man prices
-a lot of Hawks kinda blew last year
-a new d-partner could change his game for the better
-there's no immediate player to take his spot
-he's still a promising young player

I'd absolutely keep him around right now. If he's as disappointing this year as he was last, by all means- start shopping at the deadline.

Yeah, I'm kind of wondering who would take his place if he was traded.

You would probably see O'Donnell and Lepisto be a fixture in the lineup then, with Scott as the #7 guy. Not something we want to do. Or you see a sign or trade (hell McCabe is still available for some reason) - but I just don't see this happening.

I feel pretty comfortable saying that Hjalmarsson will be on the team for the whole year. Scotty Bowman loves him, hell he compared him to Lidstrom - right or wrong, he compared him to Lidstrom.

I'd trade a guy like Brian Connelly for someone like Gaustad.

No, not the #2 center answer but we solidify the center position where as Connelly would get a crack at the NHL.

If Hammer is traded, I think it's to Florida for Weiss. I doubt Hammer is moved tho.
