Awesome! I just read a different article a week ago discussing this same topic. The suggestion was to run the same offense that had been working during the game and/or the offense you're best at. Statistically a team has a higher success rate of wining by gaining a first down than it does running a less successful offense to take time off the clock.

This can go a lot of ways because you might be a successful running team but given the obvious defensive front, you might not be as successful. So the play call should be based on the best plays in your playbook given they may sell out against a run formation. This often leads to the opposite play many fans would expect. But that's the beauty of football and trying to out think the opponent.

Its clearly not factoring in a trailing team that has no timeouts (say, any lovie smith team) or a trailing team who may choose not to call timeouts (say a john fox team)

The prevent defense and prevent offense always seem to increase the odds of losing the game IMO. I can't stand seeing the team I am rooting for, electing to try and win the game by going into turtle mode.
