Joe Buck makes me miss John Madden... so much.

I used to get irritated with Madden and his permanent Favre hard-on but I would take his inane babble over Joe Buck's message board analysis any day of the week.

First - I'm a football newbie and I'm very unfamiliar with who John Madden is. I've read the quotes hovever and many of them do not seem that dumb to me - more like stating the obvious. Some could even have meaning (when you have great players and they are playing great, you can't have anything else but great football) other would depend on the tone they were said (5 10 12 and 14 could be even taken as sarcasm).

I'm sure critics can find better quotes.

Madden and Summerall covering the Bears Sundays at 1. Great time to be an NFL fan, imo. A memorable era ended for me when he retired.

He was a HOF coach with the Raiders and lead them to a superbowl win. He became a commentator after coaching. He just said extremely obvious stuff, like you said. Madden football video games are named after him as well.

He's like the trademark of the NFL, imo.

Back in the 80s before Dish Network and Direct TV you could get a 12 foot satellite dish in your yard. If you had satellite all the programs were free. During commercials the networks didn't shut off the cameras for fear they wouldn't turn on so the cameras were live while the fans were watching commercials. So during this 2 minutes Madden would talk to the satellite dish owners. The camera men would pan the crowd and find hot chicks and Madden would say stuff like: "Hey folks how do you like those hooters". Or he might say: "when we come back from the break Im going to talk about this or that. On NBC news a black reporter named Max Robinson was fired because he would make all kinds of racist comments during the commercials

how unfunny is Rob Riggle?

(Answer: very)

And MadTV, at least in its early days, was everything SNL wishes it could be

Man Ole, glad I'm not the only one Riggle is just awful in the the whole fox pregame is pretty bad especially in between segments when they show the studio and have Jimmy and Terry "trying" to be funny... its brutal

I think you missed the part about it being in the 80's haha

Shits been pussified. I'm polite, attempt to not cuss in public, and people who intentionally try to offend random people around em annoy me, but the direction EVERYTHING in this country has gone annoys me. Shouldn't be 'forced' like it has, too many damn lawyers.

Riggle is hilarious in movies, it just doesn't translate to anything else. I respect the dude though, think he was a Lt. Colonel in the USMC, not a dude to be fucked with.

Well yea movies are totally different and that's probably why they brought him in plus he seems to have some kind of football knowledge . the comedy on that pregame is just way to forced.

Dennis Miller in the Booth was terrible about as bad as cornhieser (sp?).. and didn't they use to have that Jimmy Guy from yes dear doing the pregame stuff?? Before caliendo. Caliendo was my favorite though but it was getting played out.. Usually just stick to the bears pregame on Comcast Chicago .. thank God I get that in Fort Wayne actually get to see bears highlights unlike the 3 seconds on ESPN

Critics can't find better quotes because he was a great broadcaster. Yes he stated the obvious quite often but I know this helped people get into football (my grandma liked watching football only when Madden was announcing because she could follow the game)

I miss the hell out of Madden.

I forget what game it was, sometime back in the 80's when his telestrator was new, but he was broadcasting a playoff game and he ran the stats and play formation for the gatorade dump.
It had a pic of the bucket just like they did the players, with height, weight, capacity, and place of origin.
He then used a freeze frame and telestrator draw out the play for the gatorade dump- this guy hooks over here and distracts the coach, while these 2 guys double team the bucket and BOOM!

Frank Caliendo doing Madden. My fave.

When I was reading the OP post I was hearing it in my head as if I were listening to Frank Caliendo. LOL
