Hey guys,

I'm from the UK, and starting to become quite a cubs fan. Still a lot to learn but really loving this game and organization, looking forward to next season with the hawks.

Anywho, the wife and I are planning to come across to Chicago most years for our anniversary (we got married on Halloween) so I can get some hawks action and some years come in time for some hawks action. My question/discussion point for this thread is to find out which places are worth visiting (areas/towns in Illinois/land marks) which are worth avoiding and in terms of holidaying - which areas to try and get a hotel, and which we NEED to avoid. Cheers one and all

Best advice I can give you is to ditch the Cubs and be a Cardinals fan. That way you will be able to come see two different Cities as well.

Des Plaines. If there was one town I'd recommend in the Chicago area it'd have to be Des Plaines.

If I was coming in to Chicago for the first time, I would hit up the museums Science/Industry+Field and the Aquarium and the Planetarium.

Navy Pier as well probably.

Go to the top of the Willis(Sears) Tower

Pick out a few places downtown to eat at.... probably hit up a Deep Dish Pizza place (I love Lou's and Giordanos but if you are downtown it might be better to try Burt's or Pequods according to many people here)

Definitely hit up a Hawks game.... and go pregame somewhere near the UC.... I usually hit Beer Bistro.... try their breakfast pizza, its good stuff.

Idk how many days you will be in, but that should eat a decent amount of time.

Probably goes without saying, but stay out of the South side

Thanks for the responses and advice. All apart from being a cardinals fan, definitely happy with the cubs ;)

Ares, we are planning on 13 nights in Chicago for the first time. Will definitely add all your advice to our wish list as such. Cheers :)

Is Cabrini Greens still around? Beautiful place to spend on a Friday evening and just stroll around.

They tore that down. But you could always take in a nice walk in Englewood. Or maybe even Gary if you feel like doing a little gambling too.

No matter what you do, DO NOT go into the South Side. You WILL become a victim of a crime.

Otherwise, I'd do a Hawks game, a Cubs game, Field Museum, the Shedd, Navy Pier. Sears Tower and Buckingham Palace.

I got lost there the first year I lived in Illinois. Had no idea where I was. Drove around for a while and eventually got back on the highway. Didn't see, hear or experience anyone so much as littering.

Perhaps we should try to avoid being too over-dramatic?

I'm not being dramatic. That has to be one of the most dangerous areas in the country.

Consider yourself lucky.

It's not that bad at all.

I've never tried it, but I always hear people rave about the architectural boat tours of downtown Chicago.

Yes, those are a blast. Even better, take a dinner cruise at night along the lake front.

Of course it's still not as fun as a day in Des Plaines.
