I got like the step down from the best membership on groupon this past year. It was like $75 but includes GA, Free Omnimax, Free Parking ($12-20 a car), and some passes to some of the special exhibits.
Actually yes, I remember when I would go with my parents in high school, my dad would just get a membership as that was about what the price of the day was going to cost anyways, and if we went back within a year, it was totally worth it. Of course we hardly went back within a year lol.

I think we went 4-5 times though between the opening of the giant model railroad and and the last time being in 2006.

This must have been late '70s/early '80s. They then started charging a couple days a week, and it went from there.

Gotcha. My dad use to say in the 60's and early 70's that the museum in the summer was overrun by unsupervised kids as parents would just dump their kids off there for the day as to not have to deal with them lol. He told me he thought that led to the museum starting to charge (in addition to shit just getting too expensive).

I'd also recommend avoiding the Wrigley area if you are trying to avoid the high crime areas.

EDIT: Most people don't know this.

Note: Brett is wrong and doesn't know it. Lake view (what people like Brett call Wrigleyville) is tied for 60th (with O'Hare Airport) for the most violent crime out of 79 city neighborhoods.

Brett has an agenda, so some of his opinions should not to be taken seriously. Some Sox fans are embarrassed by the location of U.S. Cellular Field (which is not as bad as Brett thinks it is). In another typically misleading post he refers to a tribune article, then posts nothing. Here is some actual information from the Tribune.

Please try to ignore the petty, biased, agenda posts and focus on some of the great ideas and answers in this thread. Enjoy your stay in this beautiful world class city.

ND is horrible.
Des Plaines. If there was one town I'd recommend in the Chicago area it'd have to be Des Plaines.

Well, he could take in a H.S. football game at Maine West, and tour the adjoining trailer park.

The thing is, if you're going tourism, you go balls-to-the-wall.

Last time we were out there, yeah, I dropped a small fortune for something like 3 Ominmax movines, 3 specialty exhibits, plus the *early* U-505 exhibit they do only a few times a month. Why? it was nearly 30 years from that time (feb 2014) that I was last at MSI Chicago. I don't know when I'll be back so why not make the most of it--and both my wife and I had an awesome time.

If you live in the area i can undertand not wanting to make an event out of it...but if you're going tourist, why not?

It's funny how the only people who claim Wrigleyville is a high crime area are Sox fans. I've yet to hear a Cub fan, fan of another baseball team, or a non baseball fan ever complain about it. Anything south of 31st street (except M of S&I)? Yikes!

This thread got me planning a trip for opening weekend. What is a good area to stay, so far the miracle mile area seems to be cheaper and it is right on the water. Hoping I can find some tickets too.

Do you poll alot of people on what baseball team they are a fan of and then ask them whether they think Wrigleyville is a high crime area?

Keep living your sheltered life on the North side then. There are plenty of great places and restaurants on the South side. Not everything south of 31st is Englewood.

Is Cabrini Greens still around? Beautiful place to spend on a Friday evening and just stroll around.

If he becomes a Cards fan he can always visit Pruitt Igoe, heard it's way better than Cabrini Greens.

If you are interested in CCS celebrity sightings, I would recommend Fogo De Chao in River North. Look for the man wearing salmon pants, loading up on kale at the salad bar.

Also, despite all my nonsense in your thread....WCLs earlier advice is really good IMO.

I was born and raised in Hyde Park, on Dorchester Ave., between 54th & 55th street, within walking distance of the MSI. I was never the victim of any crime, nor did I ever feel that I was ever in any dangerous area. But my family moved out in the early '80s, so it's been awhile. How's that neighborhood holding up?

I'm also curious what Hammond is like these days. Born and raised until about 14. I'd imagine it's gotten pretty rough, but who knows. I haven't been in the old neighborhood for almost 20 years at this point.

For serious.

This thread also inspired me to book a couple of spots on one of those architectural boat tours. Surprise my better half...one has a twilight tour that does not ship out until 7:30pm.

I can do no wrong all summer after that move.
