Her worst crime, imo, wasn't to the people who gave her money. It was to the genuinely needy beggars these people likely won't give to next time.

I'm a little jaded by the fact that Portland has oodles of these people begging, the vast majority of which just want to inject your donation in to their arm. Kind of hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.

My thing is, I will gladly help someone out, but tell me the truth. There is a guy that is always at the same place claiming his house burned down. He's been there everyday begging for over 8 months.

That's why I always prefer to give them food instead of money. I used to always give this one guy some money until I saw him using a cell phone.

I think working in a city makes you jaded a bit on this front overall.... I get off the train.... people with jugs wanting donations for various causes.... usually 2 or 3 times a week.... Cancer research, Autism, Veterans, Firemen, Police, etc all the same ones that will stand at traffic lights and walk up and down looking for donations. Ok so I give to some of those if I have the time to stop.... but they are also there when I leave, I don't donate twice. Then you leave the station and sometimes donation people are standing outside too and then you start walking to work and you encounter the same people in the same spots every day asking for money... one dude stands outside the Walgreens in a clean polo every morning.... looks like he could at least try for a job somewhere. Then there is Krazy Eyes who yells racial slurs and other nasty things at every passer by every day. Then you have the lady who got me to stop and take out my headphones to ask me for money because she was dressed nice like any other office lady downtown... something tells me she doesn't need my handouts. And I think worst of all from my younger days were the experiences where a person comes up to you and asks for money with some story about "Man I JUST NEED 5$ FOR A BUS TICKET, JUST 5$" and I say ok.... and I give him 5$ and now he says "Ya know I hate to ask but I haven't eaten anything today, you think I can get a little more?". **** you.... I am sorry to all the truly needy folks who could use a buck or two to help them eat for that day, but there are too many leeches who don't need to be panhandling or are just frauds who try to con you for money or they are needy and greedy, **** it.

Agreed. I work in mid town manhattan and there are people are all over you can get desensitized by it. There is a girl with a sign about how she fell on hard times and is trying to get to LA. With the amount of people who pass her every day, she should have made enough for a plane ticket in literally 1 week. Otherwise (and not to sound mean) but if you are homeless and have no one (i.e. family, friends) And you want to get to Cali, start walking. It would prob take what like 3 months or so but what else does she have going on...Plus it's beautiful out there. Who wants to be homeless in nyc or chicago in the winter...f-that

I also love the guys that say "can I get a few bucks, I really need a beer". I will always try to help those guys. I dont blame them and at least they are calling a spade a spade!

In 2000, Orlando passed an ordinance that allows downtown begging only in "panhandling zones" — small blue boxes painted on the sidewalk.
In 2007, the city tightened the rules further, banning panhandling after dark.
It's been three years since City Hall installed 15 "homeless meters" around downtown Orlando, providing people the option of giving their change to a meter rather than a panhandler. So how much profit have they brought in?
About $27.

Mrs. NCChiFan, gave a guy $20 after he filled her ears with a sob story about being stuck in town, forgot to pay Credit Card bill, didn't bring enough cash, embarrassed, just trying to get down to his parents house down state. This occurred at the local Mall parking lot during the summer. A week later my wife was walking into the Target (different part of town), yup, you guessed it, same well dressed man, yielding the same Bull Shit story to another woman in the parking lot. My wife got livid, like the guy in the video. Pan handling happens to be illegal and enforced in my home town. She called the police, walked into the store talked to store security, etc...

Shit like this shouldn't happen. We contribute to an organization here locally, that pre screens and qualifies all recipients of assistance. They donate clothing, food, rent assistance even utility assistance to those who show need. That makes a lot more sense to me.

What a bish. For real though, I never give to panhandlers, I always assume they're full of shit. I'll never forget the one time, and this is the reason I don't waste my time and money on these people, I think it was in D.C. I was probably 13 or 14, my whole family is walking down the sidewalk and this older woman is there, saying something really low, and I stop and try to listen to her,she was looking for money, my father turns around and tells me (yelling) let's go! I say she is looking for money, and he says he doesn't care. Get back to them and he tells me to never stop for those people, a lot of them fake it. And if they want to get money, go and get a job instead of standing on the street. Since then I see them, I glance then keep walking and won't say a word to them.

often times homeless shelters and social services will provide cheap load as you go refurbished or used cell phones to the homeless so they can be contacted for work or healthcare. Its hard to get out of the gutter without a number to be reached at and set up some momentum at life. So just because you saw a cell phone doesn't mean his life isn't currently fucked and he needs food.

When you eventually leave your home and forget where it is because of dementia, I promise to give you a few bucks for bus fare.

You can get free cell phones with free service. At least here in Chicago they offer them.

Heh, another incident, the above reminded me. I open a gym for the general public to play Basketball in, 1 night a week. Several times now a guy missing a hand has come in and tried to panhandle. One of the guys was about to give him something when I mentioned, you do realize his disability check is probably more than what you make in a month, mainly because I knew the kid was having a hard time finding a job.

>sighs< I'm too jaded.
