# GM John Paxson confirmed to reporters on Thursday that Deng will not play again in the regular season
# Paxson also said that if the Bulls were to make an extended run in the 2009 NBA Playoffs, he would not rule out Deng’s return if his symptoms have improved

Looks like Deng's done for the year, only back on an extended playoff run.

If we do go on an extended playoff run, you just keep sitting Deng, unless there is an injury to another player, as those guys will have been playing great with each other and have developed a good chemistry for that playoff group. Deng might come back and disrupt the chemistry or just play poorly.

What will be crappy is if he ends up getting the surgery in 2 months rather than having it just done a month ago.

Maybe maybe not. Maybe it makes him not play for GB.

Deng could be run over by a buss and he'd still attempt to play for Great Britain..

Okay, maybe not. But I agree ith Doug here. He should have just gotten the surgery and be done with it. He would have been shut down for the year, and possibly be fully healed to begin the summer.

I really wish he would just get the damn surgery. He is starting to make me more mad by the day. He is making himself look very stubborn IMO.

I love Kush's nickname for Deng: China Doll Deng. Brilliant. 77 regular season games missed, and an entire playoff series in his rookie year, I believe.

i really wanted to see him back, off the bench to just give salmons a breather here and there rather than linton johnosn or some other scrub play...we could of really used his defence in the playoffs especially playing against either the cavs or boston...we had to go with gray tonight when noah and thomas were both in foul trouble..would not of minded a rose/gordon/salmons/deng/miller lineup for a few minutes...so many offensive weapons with that lineup

All I have to say is Deng needs to rest up, strength train to avoid problems and stay the hell out of GB. Don't do it Deng, we need a big year out of your next yr.

I don't know, there was a thread on the old big board and there wasn't a concensus. I really hope he respects the people who invested 71 mill in him, he really needs to stay here, get stronger(legs) and learn to play better with rose.

Perhaps.

It depends on the clause in his contract and his insurance with GB.

I know in baseball you can because the Mets restricted Johan Santana from pitching in the WBC.

It's not really a 'rule', though.

It all depends on what Deng's insurance looks like. An insurance he had problems with last season before he began summer play with GB. I don't recall the technical terms, but if his insurance only covers something specific, it holds water to the clause we have in his NBA contract.

At least, that's how I understood it. Doug may shed some light on this.

I recall that the Bulls can ban him from playing if he can't get insurance. But if he can get the insurance, the Bulls can't "officially" ban him, they sure can pressure him though. Doug might be able to confirm this. I suspect that this year they will have the injury risk conversation with him prior to the Summer and hopefully the fact that GB is already in the olympics leaves him nothing to play for this summer.

I'm not sure of the specifics.

http://www.basketball247.co.uk/news/archives/00000171.shtml

Deng will complete some formalities over his paperwork and the Bulls still have to officially put pen to paper to give their approval to the plan.

The minute Deng, 23, was left off the NBA's group insurance policy, the agreement between the NBA and FIBA that requires all international players to be released to play for their countries went out of the window.

And even though GB have now insured Deng's back against injury, the Bulls can still technically veto him playing.

This site implies that the insurance needs to be the NBA group policy or else the team has veto power. I don't know for sure whether it's accurate though.

An interesting scenario could play out. Ben Gordon seems like a lock to play imo. His free agency situation should be resolved in the first few days of free agency imo, so he should play. Potentially, Gordon, Mensah-Bonsu, and Azuibuke could lead GB to the European Championship win, without Deng, that would be embarassing...but with both Gordon and a healthy Deng, I think GB is right up there with the other top European teams, especially since Buke should be joining the team in addition to Gordon.

I don't want to bar him from playing internationally though. I want to see the Gordon and Deng vs. Derrick Rose, 2016 Olympics game in Chicago. That would be such a great draw.

IF he gets surgery he shouldn't play. His own trainer has even advised him against playing for GB

I think Gordon will probably be resolved prior to the international play this year, but I'd be very surprised if he's resolved in the first few days of FA. That happens for guys who teams need to compete heavily for and are willing to pay huge dollars.

I don't think anyone is going to come out and make Gordon their #1 priority this off season.
