The nicest thing about this is that (according to mlbtr) Pena's $10m contract that pays him $5 after the season ends will belong to the team that picks him up. So the Cubs essentially got a half season of him and a 'spect or two for $3m.

wow.

Nicely done...hendry?????????

Question is, are the Dbacks/whoever signs him willing to pick up that salary?

I'm sure they are, but if they pick it up then the prospect(s) returned wouldn't be as polished.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. But for the Cubs to move him and have Colvin/Baker split time for the last two months, it makes it that much more likely they get a big-name FA 1B.

I'm gonna miss Pena. I've actually come to like him in his time here. But I'll like Prince a whole lot more.

Much like with Ramirez, who says he loves the city, there is nothing stopping the Cubs from trading any of the players who have expiring contracts, like Pena, for prospects and then re-signing them in the off season.

How about LaHair. The triple A 1st basemen. Yes he is 28 but hey, he is going for the triple crown in AAA haha. Why not give this kid a shot?

Might be worth a try if the bidding war gets too high for Pujols (whom I feel sticks with the Cards) and Fielder (who I would rather sign). Pena wouldn't be a bad bring back either, assuming the price is right.

Yes, there is. If Ramirez is traded his contract vests for next year. & why would you want to bring back a 34 year old 1B?

Because after Fielder and Pujols, Pena may be the best option the Cubs can acquire for 1B.

Though I wasn't and am still not opposed to playing Colvin at first.

You must have missed the recent update from Rammy and his agent then. His agent said that he might consider a trade in August, but he would require the guaranteed year if he is traded to be dropped.

I am. Dude's a bum. 4th OF at best. starting 1st baseman? Good night that'd be ugly. I'd like to see him try to dig 5 balls outta the dirt routinely.

He can probably make about 90% of the digs Pena makes routinely. There's a reason you put your worst defender at 1B. But the problem isn't defense, it's the fact that Colvin probably doesn't have the consistent bat to justify hiding him at 1B. So yes, he's a 4th OF at best.

I wouldn't write Colvin off as a 4th OF at this point, but counting on him long term at 1B would be a mistake. I argue that a Colvin/Baker platoon out to finish the year at 1B to see what Colvin's bat is like with regular ABs, but that is only to see if Colvin can offer more offensive production than Soriano at this point. If the answer is yes then simply cutting Soriano at the beginning of next year might make sense. I think the answer is no which is why I think unless they can get a team to take some of the salary and/or get a small prospect or two back that Soriano should stay.
