He can probably make about 90% of the digs Pena makes routinely. There's a reason you put your worst defender at 1B. But the problem isn't defense, it's the fact that Colvin probably doesn't have the consistent bat to justify hiding him at 1B. So yes, he's a 4th OF at best.

defense is still a problem. If Colvin can dig 90% of the balls Pena digs, that still means he's having an error every 2-3 games. Couple that w/ the fact that his offense is WAY overrated and I'mma say no-thx.

I wouldn't write Colvin off as a 4th OF at this point, but counting on him long term at 1B would be a mistake. I argue that a Colvin/Baker platoon out to finish the year at 1B to see what Colvin's bat is like with regular ABs, but that is only to see if Colvin can offer more offensive production than Soriano at this point. If the answer is yes then simply cutting Soriano at the beginning of next year might make sense. I think the answer is no which is why I think unless they can get a team to take some of the salary and/or get a small prospect or two back that Soriano should stay.

I disagree. Even if Colvin is better it won't be by a large amount. & as long as soriano can be at least a somewhat productive player, I think he should not be cut. Someone out there will pick up some of his contract & any relief is better then none.

Which is the argument I was putting forward. If the Cubs can get salary relief then they should look to move Soriano. But the consensus seems to be that teams aren't going to offer any, but expect the Cubs to pick up practically the entire salary and not get anything in return. If that is the case then Soriano is more valuable on this roster than off of it. The question just remains what role does he serve. I've put forward the argument that he ought to be in a nera 50/50 platoon in LF with a guy like Colvin. Colvin isn't my ideal, but it is the best cost efficient available option at this point. Ideally the Cubs get the next couple of months to evaluate Colvin at the big league level by moving Fukudome and Pena.

Football will divert my attention soon enough, but watching games where the biggest thing I am hoping for is Jay Cutler not to get hurt isn't going to make up for how terrible this Cubs team is.
